Another urban planning exercise could be initiated by the City of Vancouver later this year, specifically the Central Waterfront area of downtown Vancouver, which includes Waterfront Station and the railyard to the north, reported Daily Hive.
"This planning process for the area has been on the back burner since the 2000s when the municipal government created a preliminary area concept in response to the Vancouver Whitecaps’ proposal at the time to build a new 15,000-seat outdoor soccer stadium (expandable to 30,000 seats) over the railyard, which has since been cancelled."
"The intent of the forthcoming strategy is to create a master plan for upgrading and expanding Waterfront Station into a world-class transit hub, build high-density, mixed-use development, and introduce major new public spaces that connect the Central Business District and Gastown to the waterfront."

One of the biggest advantages of mixed-use developments is convenience and walkability. When homes or apartments are integrated in the same building or community as shops, restaurants, and offices, residents have easy access to amenities and don’t need to drive everywhere. This makes mixed-use projects ideal for urban neighborhoods and downtown areas where walkability is prioritized.

"City of Yes": With over 12,100 new apartments under construction as of March 2024, representing a 16% increase in local inventory, Jersey City is setting a high bar for urban development. In 2024, Jersey City is expected to complete approximately 8,000 new apartments as part of ongoing and upcoming developments. This proactive approach stands in stark contrast to New York City, which, despite its much larger population of 8.3 million compared to Jersey City's 292,000 residents, is projected to complete only about 11,000 new housing units this year. The irony is clear—Jersey City's effective urban planning outpaces New York's "City of Yes" slogan.

STRATEGIC PLACEMAKING #1. Phase 1 of west London's Brentford Project is almost complete. The transition from Development Strategy - to - delivery is super rewarding for all those involved.
Daring to push the aspirations for tenant mix, daring to challenge the design, and holding steadfast to the vision are keys to success.
These new urban villages are key components to what defines modern neighbourhoods, so there is a responsibility to all those involved to deliver what is relevant to the local, and wider community.
To recognise needs, but to amplify and enhance. The ground floor is the threshold of all such mixed use developments and is the heartbeat that drives its vibrancy and sets its tone.

Is the romance of flight dead?
Not if Toronto’s Downsview project has anything to say about it. As we witness yet another urban transformation, this one asks: can a planned community bring history to life, or will it simply be another footnote in the city’s forgotten development history?
In my latest article, I explore how Northcrest Developments is betting big on the past to shape the future. By preserving and repurposing an old airport’s iconic hangars and runway, they're creating a community where nostalgia meets modern urban living.
If you’re intrigued by how history and innovation can coexist, and what that means for the future of urban development, dive into the full story. This project might just change the way we think about preserving our past.
