Long Island Is Entering A Blood Emergency as of This Afternoon. What is a blood emergency? It means that there is only enough blood to cover area hospitals for 3 DAYS. This trend will continue throughout the summer when more blood is needed, not less. Introducing the Pint for Life first annual blood drive. In conjunction with a local networking group, I will be hosting the Pint for Life First annual blood drive on June 21st starting at 8am. The location is 25 Melville Park Dr, Melville, NY. We are looking to get 100 pints donated that day. The premature passing of rugby legend Rob Burrow as a consequence of motor neuron disease, one of far too many rare and not-so-rare incurable illnesses, is a reminder of how much remains to be done therapeutically to provide all people the chance at a reasonable quality and duration of life.  Millions of people still suffer from incurable illnesses, many of which strike young.  Though most are not so well-known, each of these individuals’ lives, joy, and aspirations are needlessly cut short, and the misfortune sends irreversible shock waves through every one of their families and social networks.  The urgency to address this need and the opportunity to have a transformative impact motivate me every day in the work that I do.  Through effective use of data, I know we can collectively break through barriers in novel ways to reveal the secrets of these afflictions and develop effective therapies to renew the opportunity of life for the millions of people who are waiting. Our ECMO initiative began when Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer met with Dr. Demetris Yannopoulos, the visionary behind the first #ECPR program in the United States, bringing #ECMO to cardiac arrest patients. Since then, we've expanded our ECMO support to organizations in Montana and Nevada. Why? "It became an equity issue" because of how little access rural communities have to the life-saving treatment, Panzirer recently said to Inside Philanthropy. We believe that your zip code should never determine your health outcome. We believe that ECMO needs to be included in the standard of cardiac care, and has a future role in cardiac arrest response. It is essential to fund its expansion, both beyond the walls of a hospital, as we did with Dr. Yannopoulos and the ECPR program, and to build ECMO capacity at the hospitals where rural patients come to receive care.
