Tackling facial eczema - Research and economic modelling by Scion holds promise for New Zealand’s agriculture sector. Scion is contributing its expertise in economic modelling to an ambitious and collaborative programme led by Beef + Lamb New Zealand aimed at eliminating the impact of facial eczema on New Zealand’s pastoral sector. The Eliminating Facial Eczema Impacts (EFEI) programme, announced in March by Agriculture Minister Todd McClay, will bring together many of the country’s top researchers as part of a $20.75m partnership jointly funded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the Government through the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund, and the primary sector. It aims to reduce reliance on zinc as a preventative measure and limit the impact of facial eczema by delivering solutions developed with farmers and leading scientists at AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, universities and rural professionals across New Zealand. Senior research economist Richard Yao and resource economist Saeed Solaymani will be analysing survey data collected from 600 livestock farmers over a phased seven-year programme to understand the impact and effectiveness of new prevention strategies and tools being developed to combat the disease. 📢 Last week, we announced Illumina’s new partnership with AbacusBio to fast-track the adoption of genomics on farm 🌿 🐄 🧬. While we have the technical sequencing expertise, we needed to find a likeminded organisation that had the skills and experience, to help farmers across the world to integrate genomics in a way that made sense for their business. The health of people, animals, plants and the environment are interconnected, often referred to as the One Health Concept, is a complex problem. Part of the solution is finding better ways to raise livestock and grow crops, that not only feed populations across the globe, but also protect our environment at the same time. 🌽 Maize Breeding 🌽 Maize, or corn 🌽, was first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. Since then, it has evolved through natural selection and traditional breeding techniques to become a staple food crop, livestock feed, and a key ingredient in industrial products. In Bangladesh, most maize production is focused on feeding purposes at present. The history of maize is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of our ancestors. They transformed a wild grass called 'teosinte' into the highly productive and versatile crop we know today. This transformation was made possible through countless generations of careful selection and breeding, enhancing desirable traits such as yield, taste, and adaptability to different climates. In the modern era, we stand on the shoulders of these early agricultural pioneers, using advanced breeding techniques to further enhance maize. Techniques such as marker-assisted selection, genetic modification, and CRISPR gene editing allow us to target specific traits with unprecedented precision. This has facilitated the development of maize varieties with improved nutritional profiles, pest, disease, and environmental resistance. 🔬🧬 But still, there are many studies based on traditional methods of maize hybridization to develop climate-resilient cultivars that are suitable for the changing climate while also giving a good deal of output. Apart from advanced techniques, traditional methods were more challenging. By improving maize's resilience to climate change, enhancing its nutritional value, and increasing its yield, we can contribute to global food security and sustainable agricultural practices. I was able to contribute to maize research in my master’s program. Where the almost a long 5 months field work not just developed my knowledge on maize breeding, also the hybridization work helped me to develop my skill in breeding sector. 🧑🌾🌽 This work is not just about increasing productivity; it’s about ensuring that maize can thrive in a variety of environments and provide essential nutrients to communities around the world. Being a part of this evolving field is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. It enhanced my understanding of plant genetics, a commitment to sustainability, and a vision for the future of agriculture.
