Interesting to see that with the exception of 2 bear funds, all of the worst performing ETFs of the year are thematic. Hell, I'll even call bear funds as a thematic investment. Thematic ETFs, funds and "smart beta" can be useful tools but I really do caution about putting significant parts of your portfolio in them. Particularly for newer launche. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of the smarter long short investors have notifications set for when new thematic ETFs launch so they can bet against the sector. Seems to be a trend of them launching right as they hit peak popularity and valuations. However, I have to admit 2 things. 1. I have used and do use some thematic ETF's in client portfolios. I will most likely continue to use them with caution 2. I know I need to charge my phone before you comment to tell me

So, if BlackRock intends on making markets for private investments through ETFs, will they then take these vehicles public? And if so, are they then publicly listed Private Market investments? Things that make you go “hmmmm”.

Often we convince ourselves that, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” before we actually perform any attribution analysis. Just because you’ve had some success or something has worked in the short-term does not mean it will work in the long-term. Gamification forces you into short-termism and investing is about the long-term. Gamification is not investing.
