When José fled violence, he knew education was the path forward in the U.S. With the support of his foster mom, he graduated from high school, studied criminal justice in college, and is pursuing a career in law enforcement. José describes what family looks like for him, including those "who are complete strangers to you who just welcome you at their home." For refugees fleeing danger, the resettlement process can be extremely challenging. That’s why we collaborate with volunteers, churches, schools, and service providers to ensure refugees thrive. Disrupting Modern Slavery Across the Humber Region In this week’s blog Andrew Smith talks about how the Humber Modern Slavery Partnership are working strategically to disrupt and dismantle exploitation and modern slavery in the Humber region. Discover the touring ‘Uncovering Modern Slavery’ exhibition and listen to the voices of victims. Read the blog: https://lnkd.in/eAZ8XSiP The Humber region is home to just under one million people and accounts for 2% of England's population. While we do know the Humber region has a comparatively higher than (UK) average rate of deprivation and children living in low-income families, we do not know how much these factors, and other complex socio-economic factors, help create the ideal environment in which modern slavery can exist and proliferate. What we do know is that children and young people do not self-identify as victims until after they have been removed from an exploitative situation. We also know that vulnerable adults trapped in labour exploitation do not disclose their abuse or try to escape because they either feel that their exploitative situation is better than their previous life, or in overseas trafficking cases, they fear their insecure immigration status may result in their imprisonment, or worse, their removal from the UK.

Our virtual Ask Me Anything program on Asylum Seekers is tomorrow. Please join us from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM to hear from an asylee client, a psychiatrist, and an attorney about the experiences of asylum seekers and how you can help them. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dszPGU7Y The topic of this program is especially timely now, as members of Congress and the White House are considering proposals that would drastically change our asylum system. Among other changes, these proposals would: 1. Prevent people in danger from temporarily entering the U.S. without being detained 2. Expand the expedited deportation of asylum seekers who have not yet presented their claims to a judge 3. Make it more difficult for people with legitimate asylum claims to seek asylum 4. Cap asylum grants 5. Require the mass detention of every family and individual seeking asylum until their case has ended. We are holding this program on Martin Luther King Jr. Day because we should all follow Dr. King’s example of advocating for systemic changes that would create a more equitable America. The proposed asylum changes would do the opposite. Join us to learn how you can advocate for asylees. #SaveAsylum #SupportImmigrants

The truth: Modern slavery is a devastating reality for 50 million people. The amount of people enslaved could fill Sydney's Accor Stadium 598 times. The hope: Australians across the country are partnering with IJM to ensure that people in poverty are protected from violence worldwide. This looks like IJM assisting rescue operations to free children, women, and men from bondage, providing survivors with vital aftercare services, training local authorities, and strengthening justice systems (and more!) *A stock image has been used in this post. Survivors of slavery are not pictured. Learn more about our work: ijm.org.au/our-work/ Our latest studies: ijm.org.au/studies

Help delayed is help denied A phrase that echoes in the cries of many Who suffer from the horrors of war And the silence of the world Help delayed is help denied A reality that scars the lives of many Who wait for the intervention of the UN And the peacekeeping of the allies Help delayed is help denied A tragedy that fuels more conflict and hate Who lose trust in the principles of justice And the values of human rights Help delayed is help denied A plea that urges immediate action and support Who seek a swift and lasting resolution And the protection of the innocent But what is the use of help when the damage is caused already? A question that haunts the minds of many Who wonder if it can restore the land And the resources of the nation What is the use of help when the damage is caused already? A question that breaks the hearts of many Who realize that it can't bring back the dead And the memories of the loved ones What is the use of help when the damage is caused already? A question that inspires the spirit of many Who hope that it can heal the wounds And the trauma of the survivors #stopthegenocide #stopwarcrimes #stoptheterror #stopthewaronchildren #stoptheviolence #palestinianlivesmatter #freepalestine #ceasefirenow #ceasefire #palestinewillbefree #savechildren #savegaza

Family Law Consultant @ MAURICE PHILLIPS | WISENBERG | Divorce Law Attorney - Accredited Mediator FAMAC.
Today marks a significant yet bittersweet milestone in a challenging and heart-wrenching case we have been handling. We successfully filed an application under the Hague Convention for the return of two young children, aged 3 and 7, who were unfortunately abducted in Europe by their mother and not returned to their father. Child abduction is a profoundly sorrowful and complex issue, affecting not just the parents but, most importantly, the innocent children involved. The emotional toll and the sense of loss experienced by the left-behind parent are unimaginable. In this case, the father has faced an agonising wait, filled with uncertainty and longing for the return of his beloved children. While we celebrate the success of the application, our journey is far from over. We are now working closely with the South African Police and Interpol to locate the mother and the children. This requires sensitivity, diligence, and a deep commitment to the best interest of the children, ensuring their safe return to their rightful home. Child abduction cases are always shrouded in layers of emotion and complexity. They not only disrupt the lives of the children but also leave lasting emotional scars. Our hearts go out to all families who find themselves in such distressing situations. #FamilyLaw #ChildAbduction #HagueConvention #LegalSupport #JusticeForChildren #FamilyReunion 🌍👨👧👦💔
