Every year, petrochemical processes used to create everyday plastics and chemicals release a staggering 920 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. But what if we could turn that CO2 into something useful? RenewCO₂, a BE Fellows project is rewriting the rulebook on chemical production. Inspired by nature, the RenewCO2 team has developed a proprietary catalyst that powers a one-step, low-temperature process for converting CO2 into carbon-negative chemicals. Oil and natural gas are omnipresent in our daily routines, far beyond their use as fuels. They are vital in the production of numerous everyday items, including plastics, medicines, and even clothing. For instance, petrochemicals derived from these resources are used to manufacture over 6,000 everyday products and high-tech devices. From the plastic containers we use to store food to the synthetic materials in our clothing, oil and natural gas are foundational. Even medical supplies, such as heart valves and artificial limbs, are made using petroleum products.

I have mentioned Pyrolysis before in regard to turning plastics back into oil. Here is another application, creating a catalyst to accelerate H2 production. Biochar is generated through high-temperature carbonization processes like pyrolysis, gasification, and hydrothermal carbonization.
