Social isolation among seniors can have serious health consequences, including increased risk of depression and cognitive decline. Last year, we facilitated over 7,000 hours of programming nationwide to combat this issue within our communities, providing social connections and meaningful activities for seniors in need. 🌟 Our senior residents at Wildwood Apartments recently enjoyed an unforgettable trip to see "Honey in the Rock" at the cliffside amphitheater, coordinated by social services coordinator Michelle Elkins. 🎭 They were captivated by the story of how West Virginia came to be its own state. The photos speak for themselves. A great time was had by all! #SeniorCare #CommunityEngagement #WestVirginiaHistory #SocialConnection

Did you know that over a third of adults over the age of 45 experience loneliness, or that a quarter of those aged 65 and older would be considered socially isolated? While loneliness can manifest regardless of how much social interaction one has, social isolation specifically refers loneliness as a result of having a shortage of social connections. Social isolation can have adverse effects both on one’s psychological well-being and their physical health. Studies have shown links between social isolation and increased risks of premature death, dementia, heart disease, and stroke. At St. Ambrose, we host several homesharing programs, where homeowners can obtain additional income, companionship, and assistance by offering an extra room in their house to someone looking for an affordable room to rent. One aim of these programs is to combat social isolation - especially among older adults/senior citizens. Studies have shown that more than half of home providers aged 50 and older reported feeling safer, happier, and less lonely as a result of participating in an intergenerational homeshare program. Did you know that more than one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely and nearly one-fourth of those aged 65 and older are considered socially isolated? Insufficient social connection can have harmful effects on physical and emotional health, specifically with our older population. Reaching out to check in can be the difference maker for our communities. Our Member Connect program connects community health workers and our Anthem Blue Cross associate volunteers (phone pals) with older adult members. And we have seen some positive results. Since the program's inception in 2017, more than 216,833 phone calls have been made to Member Connect, nudging our members to make behavior changes that reduce #isolation and #loneliness. So far, 87% of participants of Member Connect experienced more meaningful connections and 43% made fewer trips to the emergency room. Our communities are powerful, providing help and connection when it is needed — especially for our most vulnerable populations. Together, we can face this challenge to help overcome isolation and loneliness. https://ow.ly/sPAf50QXWMH

The facts on ADUs for multigenerational living, aging in place and boomer retirement #housing #ADU #boomers #ageinplace #CMHC #FinanceCanada Canadians want to invest in the housing crisis, think of the impact on LTC facilities if our aging community could live close to family in an ADU
The United States needs more multi-generational housing. Structures like ADU's, and duplexes are a practical and often meaningful solution. According to the Pew Research Center, "Multigenerational living has grown sharply in the U.S. over the past five decades and shows no sign of peaking. When asked why they share their home with relatives, Americans often give practical reasons related to finances or family caregiving. But the experience also has an emotional component. About a quarter of adults in multigenerational homes say it is stressful all or most of the time, and more than twice that share say it is mostly or always rewarding."
