But what does it take to be successful in this role? Authenticity is key. A successful business development leader needs to be personable and add value to each engagement. Private equity is a relationship business and your intention in this area can be a game changer. But it's not just about external credibility. Internal credibility is equally important to help drive investment decisions. Companies want to know whether the BD professional they first engage with have say so or are included in management meetings during initial engagements. That says a lot about how serious the firm is on nurturing lasting relationships and about business development as a whole. When it comes to building profitable relationships and pulling insights from your own activities, prioritizing business development can make all the difference. Leverage technology and data-driven CRM systems to understand where time is best used to maximize deal sourcing efforts. Know all the players in the space and their role in the game. Whether it’s investment bankers, business brokers, or lawyers develop a robust pipeline of intermediaries. Networking is the lifeblood of business development and finding ways to help others even when they don’t have a deal for you can open a door down the line when your ticket is called. BD private equity professionals use a variety of methods such as conferences, virtual meeting calls, and professional networking organizations to deepen deal pipeline opportunities.
