How often in the workplace do we really take time to be empathetic to our co workers? Especially working in the Nursing field where empathy and compassion is supposed to be #1 motto to practice by how often are we extending that same compassion to our fellow co workers, nurses, and medical assistants? You’re expecting for others what you can’t even do for your own co workers is shameful. People come on Lindkin to talk about statistics, job promotions, how to live and thrive, but what does any of it mean if we don’t actually apply kindness to our lives? I’m so over many peoples words in the professional realm about this or that with little to no action. Here’s the reality. Gossip is not professional nor is it kind. Looking down on someone because they need help or training is not professional or kind. Only thinking about yourself in the work place is not professional or kind. The list could go on! Did they read your job posting...... Posting your urgent home health CNA roles on a job board will only bring you an overflow of hundreds of potentially unqualified nurse assistants, most of whom didn’t even read your entire job post. I call this the “Instant Apply Effect” where nurses who are unhappy with their current role apply to 20 positions at a time. But have you tried flipping this dynamic around? Instead of posting a single job description to get hundreds of resumes, you should identify a short list of solid CNAs in your area, and speak to them directly. Send them an email or call them to actually start a conversation. Because a vast number of the most qualified nurses aren't actually looking for work at any given time, and won’t even see your job posts. Rather than spending 90% of your time scrolling through the dud resumes, you can spend 90% of your time setting up conversations with the CNAs who have a high chance of success!   

Recently, a nurse with 30+ years of experience who works in a rural hospital wrote in to us to share her concerns about the continual erosion of adequate staffing, combined with declining morale in the face of ever increasing patient numbers and acuity. “I write this letter with genuine concern surrounding the lack of support for new graduates. There is continual discussion about training more nurses, more aides, more clerks, more lab and diagnostic staff in an ever declining workforce, yet no talk of support. New grads arrive for a job in our public health system and I fear they are not receiving enough orientation or mentoring to equip them to feel competent in their new roles. New grads are expected to be charge on nights. They are terrified and considering leaving healthcare already. New lab techs are given one day training on a bench and the next day are expected to run it alone. New clerks are trying to teach themselves after only a few days of training, and so on... The reality is staffing is so short, spread so thin, that the senior staff are just trying to keep their heads above water with patients, never mind mentoring and teaching new grads too. The irony though is that we desperately need our new grads to stay! Somehow we need to find a way to support them better. We can't afford to lose another nurse - never mind the mentality of sink or swim.” #2024TimeForAction

In previous leadership roles I've held, I've spent a lot of time on the floor with the staff, by choice. I've found it's the best way to get to know the nurses and techs on a personal level. Plus, I consider myself a nurse first, and a leader second. There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than to start a difficult IV, run specimens to the lab, strip a dirty labor room, or double-check a cervical exam for a new nurse. In my current interim leadership role, I am on the floor working alongside the bedside staff because that is the role they hired me for (night-shift supervisor of a very busy L&D unit). And this experience has solidified in my mind what is the most important trait of an effective leader, which is to spend time on the floor, alongside the staff, visible to everyone. If I weren't on the floor alongside the staff, I would not feel firsthand the frustration of not having needed equipment, and how greatly that affects workflow and efficiency. I would not be able to recognize inefficiencies with how patient rooms are laid out. I would not experience the frustration when needed items are inaccessible in the Pyxis, and realize the importance of reaching out to pharmacy to get it fixed. As a leader, I will never NOT spend time on the floor, working alongside the nurses on my team. The information you can obtain through this experience is invaluable at helping you really KNOW what your team needs to do their jobs effectively and be more satisfied. This role I'm in now has been an amazing learning experience for me. Every role I take, I walk away a stronger, better leader. #servantleadership

Oregon’s hospitals have added 2,900 jobs this year, continuing a steady growth trend in the health care sector. This bright spot contrasts with statewide job growth, which has slowed in the past year. The information is part of an Oregon Employment Department report, which also shows 18,800 vacancies, including 1,600 open nursing positions. The data show that Oregon’s hospitals are vital sources of jobs, and that there’s still work ahead to grow the state’s health care workforce to fill those nurse vacancies.
