Who knows what the largest NATO base in Europe is? Soon, the answer will be Romania's Mihail Kogălniceanu (MK) Air Base. A $2.7B project is underway to transform this Romanian air base into the largest NATO military installation on the continent. Once complete, the base will span nearly 7,400 acres, making it twice the size of the U.S. Air Force's Ramstein Air Base in Germany, which currently holds the title and includes 9,000 military personnel and DoD civilians attached to the 86th Air Wing, the host wing at Ramstein Air Base, bringing with them more than 12,000 family members. The U.S. military’s Kaiserslautern Military Community, of which Ramstein forms a part, supports more than 56,000 service members, civilians, and dependents. The enhanced MK base will support a diverse range of operations, with infrastructure designed to host up to 10,000 NATO soldiers and their families by 2030. The facility will include maintenance hangars, fuel depots, ammunition storage, and advanced aviation technical resources, in addition to schools, hospital, and other facilities for the families.
This base location is important for its strategic significance for the needed present and future missions of NATO purpose of existence. Now, all we need is to fix NATO!!!!!
Interesting!
Yes, the planned/ongoing growth there is amazing. MKAB was a much less known site just a few years ago. It certainly was when I first visited nearly 20 years ago and then returned about 2.5 years ago to stand up a project. Constanta was better know as a summer Black Sea resort.
