It is critical to acknowledge and explore gender differences in every aspect of health research, as Dr. Tracey Lambert points out in this piece for Today's Practitioner around the topic of #obesity research. She addresses how hormones impact food cravings, as well as the sexes react differently to similar interventions. However, the gap in knowledge - and even awareness - could be most clearly seen in the fact that a 2022 study cited by Dr Lambert found that US women had a significantly greater weight gain over a 10-year period, which the authors suggested was due to weight gains in pregnancy and because 'women are less physically active than men'; however, the authors didn't discuss weight gains associated with hormonal changes of menstruation or menopause as a cause. Women aren't just small men. It's time to think differently and address #genderbalance in clinical research to support innovation and better consumer health. 🌍 New Insights on Global Health Disparities 🌍 Excited to share key findings from the recent study, "Differences across the lifespan between females and males in the top 20 causes of disease burden globally: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021." 🔍 Key Findings: Females: Higher burden of morbidity-driven conditions like low back pain, depressive disorders, and headache disorders. Males: Higher burden of mortality-driven conditions, including COVID-19, road injuries, and ischemic heart disease. 📊 Age-Specific Differences: Differences between sexes increase with age. Notable disparities in HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa among those aged 25-49, with females experiencing significantly higher DALY rates. 🌐 Global Trends: Females have higher DALY rates for mental and musculoskeletal disorders. Males show higher DALY rates for conditions like COVID-19 and ischemic heart disease. Minimal progress in bridging health differences between sexes from 1990 to 2021. 📍 Regional Insights: Consistent patterns of higher mental and musculoskeletal disorders burden among females across all regions. Sub-Saharan Africa displays significant differences in HIV/AIDS burden, favoring females. High-income regions show substantial differences in depressive and anxiety disorders among females. 🔗 Implications: Urgent need for sex-specific and age-specific health policies. Promotion of gender-sensitive research and interventions to achieve greater health equity. This comprehensive analysis underscores the importance of tailored strategies in health system planning and policy-making to address these disparities effectively. For #WorldObesityDay, we are highlighting a recent study from the Lancet titled, “Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: a pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults” Highlights:  • Obesity rates have 2x among adults and 4x among children & adolescents from 1990 – 2022.  • Total number people worldwide living with obesity has surpassed 1 billion • In 1990, 8.8% of women and 4.8% of men around the world were obese.  • In 2022, 18.5% of women and 14% of men around the world were obese. There is an urgent need for measures aimed at tackling #obesity . At Entera, we are working to develop oral oxyntomodulin (GLP-1/glucagon agonist) tablets for treating obesity. A six-year-old who weighs 80 kgs. A nine-year-old pre-diabetic. A 13-year-old diabetic - and a generation of children at risk of asthma, hypertension, certain types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and orthopaedic ailments. That's how COVID impacted our kids, doctors across India tell me. And yet, neither the government nor parents consider childhood obesity as a serious health issue. One of the doctors I interviewed cited the case of a teenage girl who attempted suicide due to obesity-related depression but did not continue with her medical treatment. Children are easily adaptable. By shedding our cultural beliefs, rooted in India's tumultuous history of child malnutrition - and recognising childhood obesity as a disease, its impacts can be reversed.
