#DidYouKnow? The Coalition of Municipal Fisherfolk Associations (COMFAS)’s response to COVID-19 was recently featured in AgriCord’s newsletter, Crossroad. The article highlighted the farmers’ organization’s (FO) shift to oyster and seaweed production after the challenges faced by their supply of grouper to urban areas, particularly hotels and restaurants. Adapting to challenges faced during the pandemic has proven COMFAS’s capacity to explore options by changing its business models. This transition led to more funding opportunities from the local and national governments. COMFAS is a Philippine FO supported by AsiaDHRRA through the Farmers’ Organization for Asia (FO4A) program. The project is coordinated with AgriCord and funded by the EU through the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Back in the office I was proud to sign the first Memorandum of Understanding between CGIAR and International Seed Federation. What a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by farmers, the primary stakeholders of the seed sector. More than ever the private and public sector should engage jointly to empower farmers in the world, and with this memorandum we aim to further increase farmers' access to quality seeds.    By combining our respective expertise and resources, we hope to make a lasting impact on global agricultural productivity and food security, improving awareness about the benefits of modern varieties. By pooling knowledge, expertise and resources, we hope to create a lasting impact on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers globally, promoting sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. There is not better time than now to strengthen public-private partnerships and to collaborate in trust.

As an agricultural cooperative with roots going back to the early 1900s, Lantmännen wants to highlight the significant role that cooperatives have played in the development of the society we live in today. 🌱♻ And with sustainability as a core part, cooperative businesses will continue to be crucial for society and for the planet in the future. 🌍 Cooperatives build a better future for all. In the following weeks, we will be publishing a series of blogs delving into the intricate challenges facing British agriculture. The challenges are complex and multifaceted, stemming from a combination of historical factors and modern-day pressures The sector has long relied on EU subsidies, which have played a key role in shaping farming practices and providing income streams. However, with Brexit and the gradual phasing out of these subsidies, farmers are navigating uncharted territory and are facing uncertainties about future support and financial stability. Additionally, the prevalence of family farms, while integral to rural communities, can pose challenges, particularly in terms of scalability and operational efficiency. This stands in stark contrast to larger, industrialised operations, further complicating the landscape for smaller-scale producers. The soaring costs of land relative to potential returns heighten the financial strain on farmers, limiting their capacity to invest in much needed modernisation and innovation. This lack of investment, coupled with limited opportunities for new entrants, stifles creativity and hampers the industry's ability to adapt to changing market demands and environmental pressures. Despite these obstacles, there is a growing recognition of the need for transformative change and renewed investment in British agriculture. Such initiatives are vital not only for ensuring the sector's long-term profitability and sustainability but also for safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities across the nation.
