Ag Meme of the week: Oh the elusive partnerships between these two… Let’s just say it hasn’t been working out great and it could be better. I know I sort of crap on Ag corporate’s sometimes or larger Ag businesses and it’s not that I dislike them, it’s that I want them to remember that sometimes they suck. Sometimes they do things that hurt the industry and other smaller groups within while rarely owning up to it. I just want a little more transparency honestly. I think we all want that, there are countless headlines and write ups on how corporate culture and influence affects people, industry, politics, and beyond. They are a force to be reckoned with to say the least. They all are needed in many ways as modern society wouldn’t function either, especially on the Ag side. I think where I’m going more is for them to recognize where they get in the way. In regards to #AgTech, there is a common process where many Ag corps will search out smaller partners and then get there hopes up followed by ignoring them shortly after or blatantly copying their products. Sometimes it’s strategic, sometimes by accident. There can be multiple groups within doing these things at the same time without realizing what the aftermath could be even. Maybe corps could just be more aware this happens. Maybe they could stop trying to get in the way and make a strong point to follow through with partnerships. When you see large corps competing with smaller business in Ag especially it really creates a strain on the industry. Certain areas are unavoidable, but wouldn’t it be cheaper and more effective to work with certain partners that have the passion and full knowledge of these up and coming tech areas in Ag? I mean it does happen and this isn’t to say it doesn’t and all corps are bad at this in Ag. There are great examples of partnerships. My worry comes in the fact that many AgTech businesses are struggling and much of it is a direct reaction of Ag Corps trying to do it themselves instead of partnering with them or following through what was intially started in a partnership if it occurred. We all get why it happens and it’s nothing new. My point is if the Ag industry actually wants to utilize and grow AgTech it needs to rethink its process. We all will benefit if they do. Here’s to that going forward!

Really enjoyed (less enjoyment in the hours preceding, of course) moderating a panel on proving the value of innovation teams in a downturn as part of #LegalInnovatorsUK. Doing anything in a downturn is tough, and recognising that innovation teams will be in the spotlight to demonstrate value is important. The panel shared lots of tips around how to maximise success. My top takeaways: 1️⃣ Identify a way of measuring value early on and figure out a way to place an actual value on risk mitigation. 2️⃣ There’s a new world of partners and customers out there. Get to know the new ventures teams at your clients, as well as engaging with IT procurement. 3️⃣ In professional services, it can be difficult to attribute revenue generation to innovation. Get the client involved early and ask for feedback on how innovation led to the win. 4️⃣ In a downturn, there’s nothing wrong with starting even smaller. Smaller milestones might actually help show results more quickly. Thanks so much to my fellow panellists Marisha Thakker Richard W.
