Sierra Leone is embarking on an ambitious journey to position itself as a tech powerhouse in Africa by meeting the continent’s tech talent needs. With aspirations to become the “Estonia of Africa,” the geographically small West African nation looks to leverage political will, government investment, and lessons from thriving tech ecosystems to achieve its goals. “The vision is to see Sierra Leone play a leading role in tech export,” Salima Bah, the country’s Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, told TechCabal. With such ambitious goals, Sierra Leone understands the need for bold strategies. It’s why the country plans to build a tech and innovation city where it will equip young people with an array of tech skills in a bid to create 500k jobs by 2028. Over the past few months, I've had the incredible opportunity to work with a SUPER team from Konza Technopolis and the ICT Ministry on drafting Kenya's premier Technopolis Bill. The Bill is designed to serve as a comprehensive blueprint for establishing, managing, and regulating Technopolises across the country. The bill is now under consideration by the National Assembly, and we are optimistic about its potential not only to benefit Kenya but also to serve as a model for other African nations aiming to develop their own smart cities and technological hubs.
