Things that make you go hmmm. With all the discussion about what's going on in the Red Sea regarding the Houthi attacks on merchant ships, the hazard posed to our Military Sealift Command ships in the area, and the response by the U.S. Navy, here's something to think about. To command a Navy surface warship, the captain needs to be qualified as a surface warfare officer. To command a submarine the captain needs to be qualified a submarine warfare officer. To command an aircraft carrier the captain needs to be qualified as an aviation warfare officer (either as a naval aviator or a naval flight officer). Submarine Groups are commanded by submarine warfare officers. Carrier Strike Groups or Amphibious Ready Groups are commanded by admirals qualified either in aviation warfare or surface warfare. Now you, like myself, can see the logic in this. But let's consider this for a moment. Military Sealift Command is responsible for the maritime logistics and ships that keep our warships replenished. They move the three Bs (bullets, bombs, and beans). Equally as important, they operate the tankers that provide the fuel to keep our destroyers and aircraft operating. So why is it that none of the Military Sealift Command leadership is qualified as a strategic sealift officer? Not the admiral in charge, nor any of the Navy captains who are area commanders.

The contract is for #Beechcraft & #Cessna planes in support of Foreign #Military Sales. The contract is “indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity,” or #IDIQ. So far, the contract calls for three Beechcraft #KingAir 360 Extended Range. Two will go to the Peruvian #NavalAviation Force & one to the Ecuadorian Naval Aviation. Other planes in the contract include the #Cessna #SkyCourier, Cessna #GrandCaravan EX, & King Air 260 #turboprop. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) operated the Hawker Sea Fury, with the first 25 RAN Sea Fury’s being embarked in HMAS Sydney in April 1949 and allocated to 805 Squadron. The carrier sailed for Australia in mid-April 1949 and arrived in Sydney in late May. Further batches of Sea Fury’s were delivered to the RAN in December 1950, October 1951, March 1952, January 1953, and January 1954. The Sea Fury was a significant part of the RAN’s Fleet Air Arm, with the type serving until the mid-1950s when it was phased out of service and replaced by the jet engine De Havilland Sea Venom. Six large and "optionally crewed" naval vessels heavily armed with missiles will be added to Australia's surface fleet under a dramatic $11 billion reshaping of the navy that will also see the acquisition of 11 new general-purpose frigates to be partly built overseas. Labor has unveiled its long-awaited "Enhanced Lethality Surface Combatant Fleet", which will include six Hunter-class frigates, reduced from an original plan of nine, as well as upgraded versions of the existing Hobart-class destroyers fitted with Tomahawk cruise missiles. Under the sweeping overhaul, Australia's current fleet of combat-ready warships would rise from 11 to 26, consisting of nine "Tier 1" frigates and destroyers and 11 smaller general-purpose frigates, as well as six optionally crewed vessels which will form a "Tier 2" force.
