The shift towards biobased chemicals in the industry promises a greener future 🌱. Today, thousands of chemicals used daily by consumers and businesses essentially start from petrochemicals, a significant contributor to about 6% of global carbon dioxide emissions. As we step into an era prioritising sustainability, the quest for renewable industrial inputs gains momentum, aiming to outrun the century-long reign of fossil fuels. One of the significant areas of focus is isoprene, crucial for making rubber products influential in both automotive and healthcare industries 🚗⚕️. Companies like Amyris, despite an initial failure, have paved the way for ongoing innovations. Ginkgo Bioworks and Visolis are now spearheading endeavours in cost-effective biobased isoprene. On another front, lactic acid stands as a shining example, playing a pivotal role as a food preservative and industrial feedstock, with giants like NatureWorks and Corbion leading the commercialisation efforts. Ethylene's story accentuates the vast potential of biobased alternatives, significantly contributing to decarbonisation efforts. With 175 million tonnes produced globally 🌍, transition to a green pathway like sugar biomass is imperative. Braskem, leveraging bioethanol by-products, exemplifies this transition's tangible path. But the narrative doesn't end here. Other chemicals like fumaric acid await revolutionary biobased production methodologies to combat high energy use associated with conventional processes, with BASF exploring innovative microbial solutions. The challenge lies in scaling and cost-effective manufacturing of these biobased chemicals while ensuring sustainability. The integration of renewable energy and recycling, aligned with targeted applications, will be crucial 💡♻️. Although biobased materials presently form a small fraction of the global market, their future holds immense promise for specialised sectors.
