Where’s Jay? Calling all Bobble Heads! Join this fun(d)raiser created by Saul Rosenthal & and Joshua Moore. Join together with the Gunkelhead community and show us all the places around the world (and beyond?) where the Gunkelheads have ended up. Help us put together a photo book and raise money for the Foundation for Education and Research in Assoc. for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback - AAPB and Related Sciences. FERB supports student attendance at the AAPB conference, and awards student research grants. Jay has always been a big supporter, and so should we. We thought it would be fun to put together a book of our Bobble Heads in their natural habitats — wherever we are currently living! We want photos of landmarks, clinics, laboratories, with a Gunkelhead is hidden somewhere in the picture, for readers to find. Yes, this is based on the Where’s Waldo series of books. Here are the requirements for participation — take at least one photo of a landmark, of your clinic, of a research lab, or something else interesting. Put your Gunklehead somewhere in that photo. The harder to find, the more the fun! Write a note about the photo, your experiences with Jay, the work you do, or anything else that’s relevant. There will be an online depository. We’ll cull through them and put together a book of everybody’s photos. Once it’s on sale, all the money it makes above publication costs goes to FERB. Jay may not be able to travel anymore, but his head sure gets around. There are Bobbles all over the world. It would be fantastic to get contributions from everyone who has one. Be a part of this fun tribute to our shared mentor. If you’re interested, get in touch with [email protected] Proceeds will go to the Foundation for Education and Research in Biofeedback and Related Sciences, which supports student travel to AAPB's conference. Details are in the attached pdf file. Contact me with questions and instructions for submitting photos! This project is approved by Jay Gunkelman, the original model. #gunklehead #bobblehead #FERB #whereswaldo #education #research #science #aapb #biofeedback @jaygunkleman @saulrosenthal #biofeedbacktherapy

Our March Mentor Monday session included a special seminar on “Defining equity-mindedness through an intersectional and anti-deficit lens” by Naomi Nishi, PhD. Dr. Nishi notes that higher education often focuses on questions that examine why marginalized students are failing. However, many of these students excel in college and postsecondary education despite the barriers. In taking an anti-deficit approach, we can better understand what factors help marginalized students thrive. For example, instead of asking “Why do so few students of color pursue STEM majors?”, we can ask “What stimulates and sustains students’ interest in attaining degrees in STEM fields?”. Want to dive further into this topic? Consider reading this framework by Shaun R. PhD at 90 years? Congratulations on your perseverance. I have settled into the humdrum cycle of work/survive/more work. I’m looking for my next opportunity in biotechnology, and will decide on a PhD as soon as I can settle the question of finance during the study period. #Raring to go! For some of us, we have come to the crossroads of whether we want to continue working, (more than 40 years post B.Sc graduation) or consider upgrading ourselves by acquiring a PhD. I find research a fascinating area and have been toying with the idea of doing active research. Maybe, now is the time to do what I have been thinking of doing for quite a long time, simply put, I would like to purchase some standard biochemistry textbooks and go back and revise some of the topics that fascinated me when I was younger, but had no time because the syllabus was too full for me to cope with leisure reading. But, now, I would truly love to read about the Krebs Tricarboxylic Citric Acid Cycle (TCA Cycle) and digest it in full. Just waiting for my salary this month so I can start my textbook purchases in earnest. Watch this space.
Congrats to my mum for receiving her PhD last Saturday. Her perserverence and dedication through various challenges of the last 9 years is a wonderful testament to her character, and an inspirational role model of a life long learner. My dad and brother, Jeff, both sadly died during this time. One of her supervisors, Prof Jill Wilson, also sadly died recently. The three of them would be so proud of her, and no doubt were at the graduation ceremony in spirit.

During #FMSEA24, participants will be immersed in a hands-on, minds-on inquiry-based lesson that showcases up-to-date lab techniques with DNA tagging in a shark attack scenario that engages students in shark and estuary conservation. Florida is known for the highest number of shark attacks which only adds to the list of misconceptions about sharks and their importance to the aquatic ecosystem. Many sharks swim in and out of Florida estuaries in search of food and as a nursery for their young. Having students connect organism and habitat restoration with a real-world case and inquiry-based strategies, increases student engagement and creates a deeper understanding of scientific concepts especially toward conservation efforts and sustainability. This approach also allows teachers to incorporate several standards and interdisciplinary concepts, thus maximizing the learning impact. Dr. Miles Dozier practiced medicine in Venezuela before coming to the United States. She has taught sciences from elementary to college. With 20+ years of experience in education, she has facilitated trainings and coached teachers on research-based strategies that maximize student learning. She has also worked at the state level with item analysis and summer biology training for the state (FCR-STEM and STEMPOSIUM). She believes today’s education must use real world situations engaging students’ interest to further their understanding of science concepts, and that incorporating socio-scientific issues with evidence-based science will increase students’ readiness for future careers. She has incorporated case studies on a wide range of real world topic such as mercury poisoning along energy transfer in the ecosystem, cases such as Ebola, Zika with the CDC one health concepts, challenging students to analyze current situations and brainstorm possible solutions. #concurrentsessions #sharkscience #sharks #inquirybasedlearning #conservation #womeninscience #HabitatRestorationandRecovery #OceanConservation #EndangeredSpecies
