📣 We are expanding our partnership with BioNTech SE to enhance mRNA vaccine R&D, clinical and commercial-scale manufacturing capabilities at BioNTech’s facility in Kigali, Rwanda. CEPI’s investment of up to US$145 million will help to establish sustainable and resilient end-to-end regional infrastructure and enable faster and more equitable responses to disease outbreaks with epidemic or pandemic potential in Africa. Expanding and diversifying the global footprint of vaccine manufacturing is critical to enabling equitable access to life-saving vaccines and delivering the #100DaysMission.  Under the terms of the agreement, BioNTech intends to provide affordable access to vaccines manufactured at the Kigali facility, such as vaccines against malaria, mpox and tuberculosis, to low and middle-income countries, with priority supply to African countries, if successfully developed and authorized. CEPI and BioNTech will work jointly to respond to outbreaks in Africa, and in the event of a disease outbreak - or a potential disease outbreak - BioNTech would dedicate up to half of the facility’s manufacturing capacity to produce emergency response mRNA vaccines, subject to regulatory authorization. Designed to manufacture a range of mRNA-based vaccines, BioNTech’s Kigali manufacturing facility could become the first commercial mRNA facility in Africa, intended to support the African Union’s and Africa CDC’s goal of producing 60 percent of total vaccine doses required on the continent by 2040.  https://lnkd.in/e8zdNUgW

As with ALL other presently produced vaccines on the market, #novavax vaccines are narrow in their scope with ever declining efficacy. Even the statement that .... " it is a stepping stone to enable authorization of updated strains of our vaccine in the future" is indicative of the industry failure to be proactive, to have efficacy against future strains as a prophylactic against initial infection. Originally set up to advance the development of COVID-19 vaccines, our network has become the largest global group dedicated to standardising the assessment of vaccines being developed against some of the world’s most deadly outbreak diseases.   Charles River is the seventeenth member to join the network. Gavi, the African Union and Africa CDC—plus France and other countries—debuted the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA), which will help meet the African Union’s goal to produce at least 60% of the continent’s required vaccines by 2040.   AVMA’s aim is to make up to $1 billion available over the next 10 years to boost the expansion of “commercially viable vaccine manufacturing in Africa,” according to a Gavi release. The AVMA will offer financial incentives to vaccine manufacturers to offset initial production costs and prioritize vaccines for diseases such as malaria, cholera, and Ebola, emphasizing mRNA and viral vector technologies.   Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e2hj25Fb

I am so excited to share that we have a new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jerald Sadoff (formerly of JNJ), who has joined us at Centivax! Dr. Sadoff has overseen or played a key role in the approval of more vaccines than any other currently active vaccine developer, including vaccines against Hepatitis A “VAQTA ®”; Haemophilus,“Liquid Pedvax”; Varicella,“ Varivax II®”; Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella combination “ProQuad®”, and others. In total, there are fourteen approved vaccines for which he has played a key developmental role. Yesterday at the 2023 Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced new investments to advance access to #mRNA research and vaccine manufacturing technology that will support the ability of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to develop high-quality, life-saving vaccines at scale. The Foundation announced a total of $40 million in funding to expand access to Quantoom Biosciences' low-cost mRNA research and manufacturing platform, which was developed through a Grand Challenges grant to its parent company, UNIVERCELLS. Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) and Biovac, research institutes with vaccine manufacturing experience in Senegal and South Africa, respectively, will each receive US$5 million to acquire the technology and use it to develop locally relevant vaccines. To further advance the technology and lower the cost of commercialization, the foundation will also provide US$20 million to Quantoom Biosciences to ensure that LMICs can benefit from the next generation of mRNA health tools. The Gates Foundation will provide an additional US$10 million to other LMIC vaccine manufacturers to be named. This new funding builds on the Foundation's previous US$55 million investment in mRNA manufacturing technology. The Institut Pasteur de Dakar plans to begin production of essential measles and rubella vaccines using UNIVERCELLS' proprietary vaccine manufacturing technology, expanding the region's capacity to conduct routine immunization campaigns.

💉𝐀𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐃-19 𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐍.1 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐞 💉 A panel of scientific experts during yesterday's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (#VRBPAC) meeting unanimously advised the use of a 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐉𝐍.1 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐞 as the antigen in this fall's formulation of COVID-19 vaccines in the US. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, #SARSCoV2 has been rapidly evolving into distinct variants, incorporating specific amino acid mutations to several immunodominant genomic regions, mainly found in the Spike protein. While the #Omicron variant and subsequent sublineages have been dominating the virus landscape worldwide, the 𝐉𝐍.1 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 emerged in August of 2023 and it became dominant across the globe by early 2024. With more than 30 Spike protein mutations compared to previous dominant variants, the JN.1 was immediately tagged as a potential evader of immunity elicited by prior vaccination/infection. In preparation for the 2024-2025 vaccine composition, several committees and advisory groups led by the #WHO issued a statement recommending the use of JN.1 as the antigen for future formulations. However, as a testament of how quickly SARS-COV-2 evolves in the global landscape, circulating JN.1 viruses gave rise to several subvariant viruses containing novel point mutations in the Spike Receptor Binding Domain (RBD). More specifically, 𝐊𝐏.2, the novel lineage containing mutations F456L and R356T (coined as #FLiRT mutations), is the fastest increasing sublineage so far. These particular mutations further decrease the neutralizing antibody titers elicited by prior infections/vaccinations. VRBPAC's decision from yesterday to maintain focus on JN.1 despite its decreasing presence in the US, is a two-pronged approach that a) takes into account that the antigenic distance between JN.1 and JN.1-derived subvariants such as KP.2 is minimal, and b) provides global alignment in the COVID-19 strain composition. As the circulating SARS-COV-2 viruses continue evolving, the scientific community should remain vigilant and continue its pursuit to further understand the evolution of the lineages, in order to forecast new Variants of Concern (VoC) and establish more efficacious vaccine strategies in the future. #COVID19 #SARSCOV2 #VRBPAC #FDA #JN1Lineage #Virology #VaccineStrategy #GlobalHealth
