Belle Taylor, Account Director and Biotech Lead, recently attended the webinar 'Biotech Trends to Watch', hosted by Virginia Li, Senior Editor at FirstWord Pharma. Here is the TLDR… The conversation between Colleen Feriod Cuffaro, partner at Canaan, and Christiana Bardon M.D., Co-Managing Partner at MPM BioImpact, focused on the key investment trends they have noticed across the biotech space ⬇️ 1️⃣ The value of clinical data. Investors are getting picker: shifting their focus to more mature companies and assets with data, rather than companies in pre-clinical stage. This means bigger financing rounds are need to ensure companies have enough money to get to the inflection point of clinical data – and beyond. 2️⃣ Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) are the hottest thing in oncology. Despite being around for 30 years, these compounds – which act as a vehicle to deliver chemotherapy to cancer cells –  have renewed pharma and investor interest, due to exploration of new targets. 3️⃣ Immunology and Inflammation (I&I) is an area to watch. Driven by massive unmet medical need and great progress in disease understanding, plus excellent clinical results – investment dollars in I&I are flowing. As a result, we're seeing everything from development of novel delivery systems (e.g. oral over injectable) to novel targets for subsets of disease populations. 4️⃣ Good companies move the needle Companies need to show that they can move the needle for patients in a big, not incremental, way. Pharma wants to invest in companies that demonstrate excellent clinical efficacy in diseases with very few – or no – alternative treatment options. Cancer rates in South America are on the rise, with an estimated 1.2 million new cases diagnosed annually and nearly 600,000 cancer-related deaths. Yet, despite this staggering burden, the region faces significant challenges in accessing the vital oncological treatments needed to save lives. Qure.ai, a New York City-based company specializing in AI-augmented detection for Tuberculosis (TB), Lung Cancer, and Stroke, has received an investment from Merck Global Health Innovation Fund for its Series D funding round. While the amount of the investment was not disclosed, Qure.ai plans to use this capital further to develop foundation models for AI in medical imaging and expand the geographical reach of its AI-powered imaging solutions, particularly into the U.S. market. This investment will enable En Carta to make a substantial leap forward in achieving preclinical data on a prototype diagnostic kit for its flagship indication, the debilitating Lyme disease, while ensuring its ability to scale industrially. CentraleSupélec Venture led the round with participation from a handful of high-profile business angels. Additional funding may be forthcoming to finance other diagnostic platform derivatives.
