Lipid Signaling in Brain Linked to Mental Disorders Recent research has uncovered a critical link between bioactive lipids in the brain and mental disorders. Elevated levels of these lipids disrupt excitatory transmission between brain cells, contributing to conditions like anxiety and depression. The enzyme autotaxin activates these lipids, but researchers found that using an inhibitor can restore balance, opening new pathways for treatment. The study, led by Johannes Vogt and Robert Nitsch, revealed that altering lipid signaling can significantly impact brain function, affecting both humans and mice. Exciting Findings on Ras-MAPK Pathway and White Matter Tracts! I am happy to share our latest publication in Brain Communications: "Impact of pathogenic variants of the Ras-Mitogen-activated protein kinase (Ras-MAPK) pathway on major white matter tracts in the human brain." Our study reveals critical insights into how Noonan syndrome (NS) and Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1), both linked to the Ras-MAPK pathway, affect white matter integrity in the developing brain. We observed that both NS and NF1 show similar yet distinct impacts on white matter, with NS having a more extensive effect. These findings highlight potential brain-focused outcome measures for treatments targeting this pathway. We are also deeply grateful to the RASopathies Network USA, Noonan Syndrom Foundation, and the Children's Tumor Foundation for their support. Here's a graphical representation of the Comprehensive Affect Testing System, a neuropsychological test used for evaluating emotion cognition. In our group we are also collecting data for validating the Italian version of the test in a large cohort of healthy controls and patients with neurodegenerative disease. #neuropsychology #emotioncognition

See our new textbook recently published on brain connectomics for neurological patients. Information on the structural and functional connectivity of the human brain has facilitated a significant expansion in our understanding of human brain anatomy and behavior. In this book, we summarize our thinking, lessons learned, and new data on the brains wiring diagram, and how this anatomical organization can guide neurosurgical thinking and the treatment for patients with neurological disorders. Most excitingly, we then dedicate nearly half of the book on the idea and principles behind the ability to rewire the brain connectome with neuromodulation - post-craniotomy, for neuropsychiatric disorders, and more! Diagnosing #autism is challenging, as it relies solely on behavioral observation. Finding specific biological markers could help detect at-risk children early, aiding diagnosis and ensuring prompt access to early interventions for best outcomes. Furthermore, when it comes to developing therapeutics for autism, treating diverse patient groups makes it hard to see what works for specific 'responsive' subgroups. It is therefore essential to develop objective #biomarkers in order to predict #therapeutic responses and categorize patients based on distinct biological subtypes. The BRAIN Foundation Foundation is proud to be funding the largest proteomic study so far that aims validate autism blood biomarkers. The project is led by Dwight German, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. This study will look to validate a blood biomarker panel for autism in a new group of ASD and typically developing  boys using a comprehensive #proteomics and machine learning study. The group will analyze over 7000 proteins by making use of multidisciplinary collaboration involving ASD diagnosis, biomarker development and #machinelearning expertise. Hey everyone! I wanted to share some insights on transcranial photobiomodulation and whether there is a final common pathway on how it works. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) involves the use of near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function in the brain, and it has shown promise in treating various neurological and psychiatric conditions. While the exact mechanisms of tPBM are still being researched, there is evidence to suggest that it may work through a final common pathway involving the activation of mitochondrial function, modulation of oxidative stress, and enhancement of neuroplasticity. By stimulating cellular energy production and reducing oxidative stress, tPBM may help improve neuronal function and promote the growth of new connections in the brain. This could have a positive impact on conditions such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Research in this area is ongoing, and it's an exciting time for the potential applications of tPBM in neurology and psychiatry. I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights on this topic!
