AlphaFold/OpenFold has revolutionized drug discovery with the ability to predict how proteins fold based on their amino acid sequences. However, many proteins are either partially folded or do not fold at all. These intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) are implicated in several complex diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular or neurodegenerative diseases. Despite advances in #AI and #ML, accurate prediction of the structures of IDPs is still challenging due to insufficient training data. Using BIOVIA Pipeline Pilot, Dr. David Kombo from the Medicinal Chemistry Department at Sanofi and his collaborators at Cornell University were able to reliably differentiate between folded proteins and IDPs by applying AI/ML to protein dynamics based on the bioinformatic representation of amino acid sequences.
