The 20th Century Evolution of the Fire Engine. Fire engines evolved significantly in the 20th century. Motorized pumpers replaced steam-powered ones in the early 1900s. By 1925, there were no more steam pumpers. Gasoline engines had problems with pumps, so fire engines needed two motors: one for the pump and one for the vehicle. Later, rotary and centrifugal pumps replaced these pumps. Most modern pumpers use them today. In the 1960s, firefighters started using water pumps, ladders and cherry pickers. These tools helped them reach places they couldn't before. Elevating booms, sirens and other new features improved modern firefighting equipment. #fireengine #firetruck #firetrucks #evolution #oldfiretrucks #firefighter
