For today’s #SimulationFriday, we have a CONVERGE simulation of a double-acting reciprocating compressor. We applied CONVERGE’s rigid-body fluid-structure interaction model to capture the flow-driven motion of the spring-loaded plate valves. In addition, we used CONVERGE’s conjugate heat transfer model to predict the temperature of the piston. Understanding how much the piston heats up and expands during operation is important due to the tight clearances between the piston and the inner bore. CONVERGE’s autonomous meshing easily captures the complex moving geometry of the compressor, including the narrow channels and tight clearances associated with the plate valves.
