Why don't major gas stations simply add a few fast chargers at each location? With all the gov't subsidies and grants already given, we could have made a huge dent in this.
Actually, having public chargers at neighbourhood gas stations doesn't make much sense, other than having one if it's a mechanical shop so they can charge vehicles they're working on. But that's"business infrastructure." I can see it as a marketing tool, but not as a public infrastructure solution. People don't want to hang around a a service station waiting for their vehicle to charge. It makes much more sense to have them where people are going to be spending half and hour or more: shopping centres, work places, community destinations like health clubs, entertainment districts.
Most charging does not occur at “gas stations” but at destinations. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/maslow-pyramid-ev-charging-benoit-marcoux-t04ae/
I don't beleive in conspiracy theories... but seeing so few chargers at gas stations, we could be tempted to think so 😁 ! Gas stations: another area where governements have a role to play for greener mobility / EV adoption. Thanks BJ Birtwell
I've already seen this at a couple of gas stations in Southern California.. I'm going to guess space is an issue for some stations. Unless they remove a gas pump to put in a charging station. Others might be waiting for the oil company they are partners with to offer them something..
Seems like even just 240v chargers at every store would be a perfect fit. Store owners want to keep people shopping as long as possible, and EV owners want something to do while charging their car.
It's a factor in why I'm waiting to go full EV.
There's another way of looking at this: every ICE car needs a gas station, very few EVs need DC fast chargers. Comparing the two as if it's an apples-to-apples comparison seriously misrepresents the issue. At the same time, there are 145,000 gas stations ... and literally MILLIONS of places to plug in a car. Everywhere that has electricity can fuel a car, if slowly.
Great point BJ Birtwell! FreeWire Technologies has made deals with gas stations in the past. GlobalData Plc said" Shell and TotalEnergies share first place with over 55,000 charging stations, with ambitious plans to expand their network in the upcoming years. https://www.globaldata.com/store/report/oil-and-gas-sector-strategies-for-ev/ bp was another leader until this week, when it cut over a tenth of the workforce in its electric vehicle charging business and pulled it out of several markets after a bet on rapid growth in commercial EV fleets failed. bp will re-up into charging in another year or two minimum, as charging and EV adoption continues to grow. It's cutback was just another hiccup. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/bps-ev-charging-arm-cuts-jobs-reduces-global-ambitions-2024-04-15/ Big Oil companies will see ICE profits shrink and move more into EV charging, following Shell's lead, as Electrify News reported: https://electrifynews.com/news/ev-chargers/shell-puts-pedal-to-the-metal-in-energy-transition-with-focus-on-ev-charging-divesting-1000-retail-sites/
I think some of it might be space. I have been in many gas stations that will have to take something out to make space to put in a charging station.
