👷 IUEC Local 4 members are dedicated to ensuring safety in every aspect of their work on elevators, escalators, and other conveyance equipment across eastern Massachusetts, most of New Hampshire, and all of Maine. When we visited their Dorchester, MA headquarters, we spoke with President Doug Cullington, Business Managers, Representatives, and some of their newest apprentices. The resounding theme? #Safety 💬 "To work safe is to think. Think before every move. Every step of every project must be talked about," emphasizes Doug Cullington, President of IUEC Local 4. This focus on safety was echoed by Mary Kate Kelly, one of Local 4’s apprentice Elevator Constructors. The construction sector is facing a skills shortage, both lacking the skilled workforce to deliver the new homes planned across the UK and also specific expertise in key areas like sustainability, modern methods of construction and technology. As the UK Government’s Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap identified - the shortage of skills is a barrier to the increased use of structural timber in construction. To attract new talent to the industry and continue to develop our existing workforce it is vital we invest in training. In recognition of this, the Structural Timber Association Ltd recently launched a new Skills Hub and Installer Training Scheme aiming to equip the construction workforce with the skills needed to help deliver on timber's potential to contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
