This interview with Darren Margolias of Beast Philanthropy touches on the very issue that Swiss4Afrika is addressing - malnutrition among infants and young children in our communities. Child growth is an internationally recognised outcome that reflects a child's nutritional status. Stunting refers to a child who is too short for his or her age as a result of chronic or recurrent malnutrition. Stunting is a risk factor for child mortality and a marker of inequalities in human development. Stunted children do not reach their physical and cognitive potential. Child stunting is one of the nutrition targets of the World Health Assembly. We wanted to work with local non-profits in South Africa, but this is extremely difficult because they have to comply with South Africa's Black Economic Empowerment laws, which completely exclude support for minority groups, i.e. people with white skin. For Swiss4Afrika this means that we have to seek funding from companies and individuals who have no business or economic interest in South Africa. This presents a new challenge, why would a company or individual with no connection to South Africa sponsor a charity that is working to alleviate the poverty of minority groups in South Africa? #inequality #minority #minorities #stunting #southafrica #philanthropy

But how do we address the social ethical concerns that it can give rise to? ↘️ Thrifting can further enable consumerism because it encourages to exchange things we don’t want with things we do, instead of consuming more mindfully.  ↘️ A lot of fashion that ends up in thrift stores isn’t size inclusive, meaning it isn’t accessible to everyone.  ↘️ A rise in thrifting leads to increased prices which can affect access for poor or otherwise marginalised folks, who rely heavily on second-hand consumer items.
