Today, I mourn the loss of one of my mentors and this generation's greatest mathematicians, investors, quant trading managers, and philanthropists. Jim Simons, founder of Renaissance Technologies, passed away at age 86 yesterday. His flagship Medallion Fund produced average annual returns of 66% between 1988 and 2018, beating Warren Buffett, George Soros, and Peter Lynch. Forbes estimates that he gave away around $6 billion to philanthropic causes.
