It's inspiring to see business owners dedicating their time to learning and evolving together. It requires openness, honesty, and transparency, which means being vulnerable enough to acknowledge weaknesses or blind spots and being receptive to others' input for personal growth.

Being a first-generation college student was the most rewarding experience. It's common for first-gen college students to feel out of place. Knowing I was "disadvantaged" going into my college career gave me all the motivation I needed to succeed. I could have easily thought "woe is me", but I would have set myself up for failure. Having done it all, I've got some advice! My tips for fellow first-gens: 1. Be tenacious. Be positive. Think outside the box. Your mindset is more important than anything. You may need to take extra steps to find information, answer questions, etc. & that's okay. 2. Get involved! Your college network will bring you lifelong friendships, connections, and the best memories. 3. Make friends. Make first-gen friends. You are not alone. 4. Remember: Not everyone has figured it out yet. Even if it seems like they all do. 5. Your Ring Day and the day you walk the stage will be the best days of your life. Fight for those moments. I will never forget how gratifying it was. To have my parents put my ring on my hand. To walk across the stage at the best university in the world. To hang my degree on my wall. And how gratifying it still is... To tell people about my involvement, my academic achievements, and about being an Aggie. And about how I was the first one in my family to do it. Be proud of yourself for your acceptance, for each grade along the way, for each acceptance into a club, and for every small achievement on your way to your degree. First-Gen students have a lot of unanswered questions. But how proud you will feel at the end of it all will outweigh any questions, doubts, or uncertainty. If you want to chat about your experiences, you're nervous about being first-gen, or you are an incoming freshman that needs advice, Email me at [email protected] . More than happy to motivate, answer questions, etc! Gig 'Em! 👍
Gig 'em to the nearly 25% of students at Texas A&M who are first-generation college students! Happy First-Gen Day to our Aggies who are beginning these new traditions in their families.
