The recently released federally proposed staffing mandate for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) includes several minimum staffing requirements for nursing homes. While the registered nurse (RN) hour requirements and RN coverage requirements will be a primary focus for nursing facilities, experts say it’s important to not overlook another component of the proposed rule: a complete revision of the existing SNF assessment. Kimberly Marselas, senior editor at McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, says the proposed rule would “strengthen certain assessment components, involve more staff in the assessment process and, possibly, trigger more frequent updates.” The transition to the new assessments would begin just a couple of months after the proposed rule is finalized.
