What a great article on internships and my favorite topic, talent pipelines. Bravo Cardinal News Here at Old Dominion University we are prioritizing #workbasedlearning in a brand new way. As Executive Director of the new Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office, my office is geared towards meeting the goal of having 100% of #ODU students participate in internship/work-based learning opportunities by 2027. Our office in its first 90 days has met with over 350 #students, countless #employers and has started the work with faculty to develop creative out of the box initiatives with regional and national employers and other organizations! Our students want to work an internship, co-op, practicum, clinical and in so many more activities. We are here to support them every step of the way. The culture is changing. Thank you Dr. Blake for this post. In my industry, law, we’ve benefitted for decades on aggressive recruiting of interns for decades. There is NO BETTER WAY to convince the best to come here, stay here, than to bring them in as raw first or second year students before NY, DC, SF find them. Sure law is “different”but is it? No. Same strategy. Show those students your work, lifestyle, opportunities, culture when they are most impressionable. Bingo. Dorms for housing, brilliant. Transportation is an interesting challenge. What would we do with them? That’s a great question with an unending list of answers that programs like ODU’s can help businesses think through. State programs like those mentioned would be gold. Get the best before those in the other 49 find them as seniors. It’s tough out there. This works.
