Contrary to popular belief, EQ and emotional intelligence are not innate but learned skills. No culture can be fostered at the back of a team that lacks basic EQ-related competencies. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐟𝐟, 𝐄𝐐 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬. On International People and Culture week, is it time to say it as it is, and call out what hurts so many workplace cultures, and most importantly, what needs to be done about it? While I’ve been away, I’ve been receiving some wonderful, unsolicited messages about the book “No More Sh*t Managers: Seven Steps to a Coaching Culture”. They make my heart sing. Here’s just a snippet of one of those messages… “This book has explained in simple, accessible terms how to embark on the ever-elusive culture shift and improvement we all want to address but with so many approaches, don’t know where to start. The examples throughout are totally relatable and inspire a way forward. The recognition that life isn’t linear really struck home. Whilst frameworks are always a great place to start, the reality is every organisation differs, and Jo’s model promotes that, knocking down all the barriers in its wake!” Simple, accessible, relatable and inspire a way forward… That’s exactly what I intended when I set out on the writing journey. Sometimes culture just seems too overwhelming to do anything about. It doesn’t have to be that way. The book offers a practical and relatable guide, and is deliberately easy-to-digest. "Self-awareness" is the first step to learn more and educate yourself and your team in an immersive ways about stereotypical biases, discrimination and what harm exclusion cause to people.  In my advising meeting with a CEO of a successful company, leader confided that, "I was born with a platinum spoon in my mouth, power and privilege all over me and the only culture I had known is the culture of power! And I really don't know how to make my company an "inclusive workplace"? I told the leader that his last sentence is significant first step, as it is a "self-awareness" to recognize that a lack of lived experiences is an obstacle for inclusive workplace. Thus a second step is to continually reflect and ask this question every time, "what, if I was subjected to micro-aggressions in workplace, how would I feel? And, Let that feeling be your guide for your and your team's advance learning. As a leader this must be an integral part of your learning journey!
