Women in speakeasies during Prohibition played a pivotal role in shaping the clandestine drinking scene of the Roaring Twenties. They defied societal norms by frequenting these hidden joints, where they enjoyed cocktails and engaged in lively socializing. Many flappers, dressed in their glamorous attire, epitomized the spirit of rebellion and freedom, challenging traditional expectations of female behavior. In speakeasies, women found a space to assert their independence, often mingling with men on equal footing and participating in the vibrant nightlife culture that defined the era. Their presence and participation not only contributed to the speakeasy's allure but also symbolized a broader cultural shift towards modernity and liberation for women in American society.

How to respond as a woman leader when a male colleague takes your idea and runs with it? This is one of the situations we discussed yesterday during our #talkingtomen live strategy call and Q&A. Here are the solutions we came up with: 💡 First, diagnose when the "idea transfer" occured. Did it happen earlier or during the ongoing meeting? 🎤 If it happened earlier, go back to the proof you have that states the idea was yours in the first place. Emails, meeting transcripts, people confirmation that they heard what you said... all is good for building the case that this was your idea. Once you have the data, leverage it during the meeting. For example, you can say: "Thanks so much for picking on the idea I shared with our team during our last talk on January 27th. Let me add a few nuances that perhaps were not so clear when I first expressed this proposal." 🎤 If the idea transfer happened live during the meeting - aka you say something, no one listens, he says something, everyone applauds - you need to reclaim your #intellectualproperty, space, and time in the room ASAP. For example you can say: "Thanks so much for picking on the idea that I just shared 10 minutes ago. I am so glad we agree on this. Let me just emphasize where I am coming from when I am proposing this and share a few nuances on top of what I shared already." Here you need to activate a few other factors: ✅ Body language: lean forward, both on camera and in-person. Retain eye-contact with each person in the room. Use gesticulation to mark your points. ✅ Voice: speak a bit louder without raising your tone. Use tone variation and intonation to make your points. Last but not least, you need to prevent this from happening again - to you and other women. Here is what you can do: 💪 After the meeting, take the "artist" aside for a short 1-1. Tell him: "Hey. Nor sure if you're aware that in the meeting we've just had you took one of my ideas and talked about it as if it were yours. We know each other for years and I am sure you meant no harm, but to someone who doesn't know you this might have come across as awkward. Can you help me uderstand what happened?" If his reply is: "What? You are taking things too personally. After all, we are supposed to collaborate and your ideas are our ideas, no? You should be glad I endorsed your project." You can reply: "I appreciate your intention. Next time, before you do that, please align with me on how you want to articulate and support something I initiated. Here is what I would appreciate seeing next time..." This is, of course, the polite version. If you come from Romania, you might be tempted to add a few expletives. But that's for a different story 😃 --- How about you? Has this ever happened to you? What happened and how did you respond? Why we should be willing to challenge our own bias 🤔 🌐✨ As we approach International Women's Day, and after our recent photo shoot I wanted to reflect on the nuances of allyship and the subtle ways our male privilege can influence our perspectives. As a man committed to supporting and championing women's rights, it's crucial to acknowledge that even with the best intentions, our biases can sometimes cloud our judgment. 🚶♂️💭 It's a continuous journey to recognize and unlearn ingrained behaviors that stem from societal norms. Despite being allies, we may inadvertently misjudge situations, overlooking the challenges faced by women. Our privilege can create blind spots, and it's vital to actively listen, learn, and evolve. 📚 Last year I read an incredible book that I recommend every man should read: 'Invisible Women' by Caroline Criado Perez. It will open your eyes and allow you to see things through a different lens. However, even with this knowledge in my arsenal and how I portray myself, I am still guilty of making an error of judgment. 🌍💬 As we celebrate the achievements and resilience of women this week, let's also commit to dismantling stereotypes, amplifying marginalized voices, and fostering environments where everyone's experiences are heard and valued. Together, we can bridge the gap, understanding that the path to equality requires constant self-reflection and a willingness to challenge our own biases. This week has certainly forced me to hold a mirror up to myself and challenge some of my choices, but we can only hope that when we fail, we learn, we relfect and we continue to grow. #InternationalWomensDay #MaleAlly #ReflectAndGrow #BreakTheBias #EqualityForAll

As we honor International Women's Day, let's pause to celebrate the remarkable strides we've made in shaping our communities and nurturing the next generation. It's a pivotal moment to ponder our influence within our circles and upon our children. Amidst the celebration, let's delve deeper and ask ourselves: What imprint do we leave in our interactions and in the hearts of our children? What habits or burdens do we need to shed? What wisdom must we embrace? And where do our paths as women lead us? These questions propel us to assess our roles, behaviors, and dreams, guiding us towards profound growth and unwavering empowerment. Let's embrace this opportunity to reflect, rejuvenate, and champion not just for ourselves but for the collective strength of all women, and remember, exercise isn't just for physical health; it's a powerful tool for nurturing our mental well-being, enabling us to thrive in every aspect of our lives. Happy International Women's Day! 🌟 #breakingbias Let's unite in breaking the bias, forging a future where every woman's potential knows no bounds.

In celebration of influential women in public speaking, let's honour Maya Angelou. Her poetic speeches were profound, touching on themes of human rights, love, and understanding. She had a unique ability to blend poetry, wisdom, and activism. Her presence on stage was mesmerising. Angelou taught us that our words can heal, empower, and inspire. She proved that femininity and power could coexist in speech. Who are the women speakers that inspire you? Share your inspirations or message me to discuss how we can foster more women's voices in public speaking. #EntrepreneurMindset #PublicSpeaking #CommunicationSkills #BusinessGrowth #StageFright

LinkedIn & Visibility Strategist || Helping women over 40 to use LinkedIn as a business growth tool, to get clients & generate revenue || Send me the word 'CONVERT' & I'll share how LinkedIn can impact your bottom line
My hands are hurting! After clapping so hard... What Dr Rashada Harry FRSA shared in the after panel discussion at the Elite Business Live had me clapping and whooping at my screen! Rashada eloquently highlighted a truth that resonated deeply with me: businesses truly flourish when diversity is not just present but embraced! This discussion, especially poignant after International Women's Day, ties directly to conversations I facilitated on Claudine Reid MBE platform; Navigating Life. Where we delved into overcoming barriers, prioritising health, and the criticality of overcoming fear amidst as black, female entrepreneurs over 40. As a LinkedIn and Visibility Strategist—and drawing from my own journey in IT, often as the sole black woman amidst older male colleagues—I've felt the stark absence of representation and the yearning for inclusion. It’s these experiences that fuel my commitment to empowering women at all intersections of race, age, and physical ability to boldly claim their online space. The heart of entrepreneurship beats strongest when we, as seasoned women, lead with visibility. We have a responsibility not only to illuminate our paths with our expertise and insights but also to guide and uplift those following in our footsteps - I loved Rashada's point about having two hands, one to help herself and one to help the person behind her! I love love love this way of thinking! I urge every woman to recognise the power of being visible, especially in spaces where our voices have historically been a whisper. Let's turn up the volume, not just for ourselves but for every woman who's felt unseen. Who are the female role models that have inspired you to show up, stand out, and stay resilient? 🫶🏾 Chelena ✨ Peart - Let’s connect ♻️ Only share if this would be valuable to your network #VVA #InspiringInclusion #WomenInBusiness

Helping businesses understand the confusing and cluttered media landscape | Media Director @MediaWords | Media Strategy, Planning, Buying | Media Trainer | Making Media Happen in an industry Full of Smoke & Mirrors
This International Women's Day, I was inspired by my 15-year-old daughter Georgia. When she cut her long blonde hair and dyed it bright red and jet black, I was worried that at her all-girls school—amid a sea of blonde hair, midriffs, and high-street fashion—she’d be bullied as a ‘goth’ or criticised for looking so different. Shopping for her upcoming formal, Georgia is defying conventions yet again. Ignoring the racks of pastel silky little numbers and looking for something different and edgy. I admire her ability to proudly embrace her authentic style and quirks, which is powerful for someone so young. Georgia shows me that following your own path, even when it defies norms, takes immense courage and resilience. But more importantly, she's teaching me that the most empowering attribute is being unapologetically yourself. I am trying to take this into my own life, and it's a core principle I stood by when creating my business, Media Words. As parents, we often worry about our children's acceptance. But do we inadvertently encourage conformity over self-expression in doing so? In the workplace, we laud professionals who innovate and think differently. Shouldn't we afford young women the same freedom to explore and outwardly project who they are? On this International Women's Day, I celebrate the boldness of young women like my daughter who cultivate that inner strength and self-assuredness early on. They prove that a woman's influence and potential are limitless when she is confident enough to show up authentically. To the trailblazers of tomorrow: The world needs more of you. Keep showing us what you're made of. #InternationalWomensDay #breakthebias #authenticity
