Too many impact investors categorically exclude the mining sector from their portfolio, not recognising the immense potential artisanal mining holds as a potential driver of socio-economic development. This makes it really exciting that I have been invited to participate in the upcoming Sankalp Forum's #SankalpAfrica2024 event, taking place next week on Wednesday and Thursday (Feb 28-29th) in Nairobi. It will be my first time attending the event. According to data from the Afrobarometer survey, 57% of the population in Africa has access to grid electricity less than half of the day, including more than 40% who are completely off-grid. The survey offers us another lens to assess energy access and the penetration of solutions to plug the gap: Access to a reliable sources of electricity remains elusive for the majority of inhabitants in most surveyed countries. This shows there is still a massive need for energy access solutions to be deployed across the continent. The data also provides us with insights into the penetration of household-owned solar energy as an alternative to grid-electricity in these markets. This shows us that: 1) There is still a huge untapped potential for #DRE solutions such as solar home systems to play a role in providing first time access to off-grid households across the continent. 2) Given the huge grid reliability issues reported by surveyed households, there is a critical need for back-up solutions and a great opportunity for companies distributing solar-powered solutions to fill that gap.
