The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recently published the Species Abundance Indicator report for England. This indicator is explicitly designed to measure progress towards legally binding targets in the Environment Act 2021, of which halting and reversing biodiversity loss is just one element. Fishing for DNA to measure biodiversity 🐟🔬 Identifying the fish species present in a river based on traces of their DNA: this method has been successfully tested at about 90 sites in Switzerland.
