This alarming event is driven by record-high ocean temperatures due to climate change and an El Niño pattern. Coral bleaching is a critical issue where corals expel the algae living in their tissues, leading to a loss of color and increased vulnerability to disease and starvation. Regions like the Atlantic Ocean have been particularly impacted, with 99.7% of reefs suffering. The situation is expected to worsen this summer in areas such as the Southern Caribbean, Florida, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. 🌍 Earth Day Reflection: Mourning Instead of Celebrating 💔🐋 Today, as we observe Earth Day, our hearts are heavy. This morning, in Cabo Verde's Bay of Sal-Rei, a tragic event unfolded involving around 50-60 short-finned pilot whales. 🆘 What Happened: The whales, which usually thrive in deep waters, became stranded. Despite the valiant efforts of fishermen, resort guests, and local volunteers, the harsh conditions made rescue efforts nearly impossible. 😢 The Outcome: Sadly, over 20 whales didn't survive. Others who tried to escape to deeper waters faced challenges due to the shallow shoreline and their instinct to stay together, which left little hope for their safety. 🌐 Why It Matters: This event on Earth Day underscores the urgent need for us to look after our marine friends and their habitats more diligently. 🙏 How You Can Help: Let’s use this day to start making real changes. The Namib Desert is a coastal desert located in Africa along the Atlantic coast towards the southwest. It's known for its high sand dunes and the point where the desert meets the sea. Spanning about 81,000 square kilometers across three nations, the Namib Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, with a landscape resembling Mars, featuring sand dunes, mountains, and gravel plains. It's believed to be around 55 million years old, making it the oldest desert globally. Despite its harsh conditions, various animals like ostriches, antelopes, rodents, and birds have adapted to live in this desert. One interesting feature is the fairy circles, barren patches encircled by grass, which some researchers speculate could be the result of alien activity, although this is not proven. The desert gets its water supply from fog, and its sand dunes are immovable due to the wind patterns. The sand's reddish color comes from iron oxide, and its shade varies across the desert.
