As strategic investors continue to focus on core assets and return on equity (ROE), and with private equity activity subdued in this high-rate environment, sell-side and buy-side advisors are increasingly engaging with the "New Kids on the Block": Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs), a crucial pillar in international investing. Rebecca Maclean, CFA, Fund Manager of the abrdn Investment Trusts Dunedin Income Growth Investment Trust, explains how the fund aims to deliver growth in both income and capital by investing in UK and European companies that meet the fund's sustainable investment criteria. The fund outperformed its benchmark over the year (FTSE All-Share Index total return), delivering a +6.7% NAV total return as at 31st January 2024. So, how have Maclean and the team achieved this? The trust has an active portfolio of 35 holdings, and they're 'looking for companies with an attractive total return' that can grow their capital as well as income. The need to pay a growing dividend means looking for resilient businesses that can generate income through the cycle and are less exposed to macro trends.
