It's been 2 weeks since I started my new IT help desk technician position and here is what I've learned: I know absolutely NOTHING. I've had previous jobs that were technical support, I finished my boot camp in 2022, and I have a home lab for practice. All of this doesn't necessarily make me prepared for every job I get. In tech, there are so many ways to do things and so many different types of software and devices. Just because you did it one way on your last job doesn't mean that's how it works on the current one. Every environment is different. I've been humbled. I thought I knew my stuff but turns out I know nothing. But I'm ok with that, it gives me room to learn what I need to. The moral of the story is to stay open to learning new things. You do not know it all, whether you have 1 year of experience or 25. Tech is forever changing and different companies do things differently. 🎉 Follow-up to yesterday's post on tattoos in the workplace! 🎉 Let me take you back to 2014. I was 24 and working as an administrative assistant in the grounds department at the University of Arizona. After a year or two as a temp, I was thrilled to be hired permanently, earning around $30k/year. At that time, I thought this was the peak of my career. Feeling invincible, I decided to get my knuckles tattooed with "PLUR LIFE." For those who don't know, PLUR stands for Peace, Love, Unity, Respect—a mantra I try to live by daily. Within a week of getting my tattoos, I was laid off. Suddenly, I was unemployed and struggling to find another office job that would accept me with my new tattoos. After a few tough months, I landed a temp job at an MSP. I had no idea what an MSP was and barely knew anything about the industry. My task was simple: data entry of sales leads into TigerPaw (anyone remember using that??). To my surprise, the company liked me enough to hire me full-time as a help desk assistant. I answered phones, triaged and routed tickets, and learned on the fly about servers and firewalls. From that humble beginning, I grew into various roles at the MSP, managing backend operations and eventually moving to another MSP for more growth opportunities. One of the projects I am most proud of was migrating from TigerPaw to ConnectWise. I loved being part of that project and optimizing our processes. After six years in the MSP world, I took a leap and became a ConnectWise consultant, eventually venturing out on my own. My 24-year-old self would have never imagined owning my own business. Those tattoos, which I once thought were a career setback, led me to where I am today. They brought me to the right place at the right time in my life. Joining a new company can feel stressful. There are new faces, new org structures, new processes, new systems, new business models, the list goes on. It’s normal to be unclear about how things work and even where you fit. Today I’m starting my fourth week as a part of the Author Health team. And though I’ve been learning a lot, I don’t have feelings of stress. I have feelings of gratitude. The team here is special. I’ve met many people in a short period of time and I left every conversation feeling supported, connected, and inspired. The quality of each person here is world class. What’s more, the mission they are on is as well. There are too many individuals in this country not receiving the behavioral health care they need. This holds them and their families back from enjoying the quality of life they deserve. Author Health intends to change that and I’m honored to be a part of it. Risk is everywhere. Job security has been in question for many years now. What is your plan B? I actively speak, educate and coach many, the importance of creating multiple streams of incomes and passive income streams. Though I was impacted by yet another #ITlayoff, I am happy to share that I have started contributing to a great organization called Itergy that focusses on the IT security and managed services space. One thing that I have learned in the past year is that company culture plays a key role in employee happiness, retention and company reputation. Key markers for company culture include onboarding, transparency, internal politics (or lack there of) and offboarding. Off-boarding, is especially hard to track. It would be interesting to have a tool/forum that focusses especially on that aspect and the experiences people have had. Having said this, I have had a great experience with Itergy so far. They took my personal needs into consideration when they hired me and I have noticed that as people leave, there is company wide communication about their departure and wishing them well.
