January is Train your Dog Month! 🐶 Ensuring your dog is trained correctly could prevent potential behavioural issue in the future. However, training is no easy road for owner or dog. Keep in mind these 3 top tips: 📅 Consistency is Key - Routine is key to getting your dog trained, set some time aside everyday to train them a new skill such as 'sit' 'fetch' and 'stay'. 🙌 Positive Reinforcement - When your dog does something great, be sure to praise them and let them know they did a good thing. Without reinforcement, your dog could lose interest in it's training. ⏲️ Patience - Keep in mind everything you are training your dog is new to them, you must be patient with their learning and avoid showing them frustration, it could lead to the dog becoming stressed or again losing interest in training. #animalhealth #veterinary #vetsurgeon #vetnurse #dogtraining #dogs #trainyourdogmonth

Benefits of Pet Ownership: Relieves Stress! Animals, particularly dogs, are often used to help individuals manage high-stress levels. Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stressed-out medical students, and anxious children are just a few groups that experience less stress in the presence of a pet. #veterinarian #vetlife #dogs #cats #pets #veterinarymedicine #veterinaryhospital #petstagram #oakhurstvet

Verbal commands Train your dog to respond to verbal commands such as ‘wait’ ‘sit’ ‘stay’ and ‘go’ to ensure you have control when out walking. 4. Stay visible You’re easier to see than your pet; wear reflective items, carry a torch, and, where possible, stay on well-lit paths. How do we protect ourselves from dog bites? Dog bites and attacks have been in the news more frequently over the last few months. The majority of dog bites occur in the home with dogs biting their owners or family members. Why would a dog bite the hand that feeds them? According to Sophie White BVetMed MSc MRCVS a vet from Veterinary Behaviour Support, many dog bites occur because we fail to understand the warning signs. Sophie explains to Danny Chambers that by improving our understanding of dog body language our ability to read how dogs are feeling in various situations, the majority of dog bites can be prevented altogether. Sophie and Danny also discuss how some common training techniques which have been popularised by social media and TV shows can actually increase dog aggression. https://lnkd.in/dhMn4P9j

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, which is a great time to spread the word about the lifesaving power of microchipping and scanning for cats! Cats who are microchipped are more likely to be returned to their families—which is critical when far too many shelters do not have humane, lifesaving programs and still kill cats in their care. In turn, all shelters, animal control staff, and veterinary professionals should adopt immediate microchip scanning protocols. Learn more at alleycat.org/Microchip
