It was a big week in Washington, D.C., as NATO allies gathered and marked 75 years of mutual defence. CADSI was on the ground to listen and advocate on behalf of Canada's DIB. The summit also brought a series of announcements and developments with a direct impact on Canada's defence industry. Event Planning Tip #9 An outside speaker can add to your conference but you need to know the rules and process to hire them! Did you know it’s possible to hire an outside speaker for a military conference? It’s true! But you need to know the rules and the process so you can be sure you do it the right way. Rule #1 You CANNOT pay someone who already works for the US government. It’s against the rules and not allowed. So make sure you know who you are inviting and if they are already employed by the government. If they are, you might just get a free speaker if they say yes! Rule/Tip #2 There are thresholds for approval if speaker fees, so know them! Typically these thresholds require a higher level of approval. You must get this approval BEFORE the event and the process can take weeks or months, so plan ahead. Rule/Tip #3 Speakers will negotiate on fees, so make sure you discuss THEIR desired fee and what is in YOUR budget. This might line up! Outside speakers can motivate, inspire, and up your conference game but know the process and rules before you go down this journey!
