🔥 Pioneering companies unite 🔥 Two months ago, we announced a new concept that we call Rebel Cells. Rebel Cells are groups of pioneering organizations coming together to transform the way they work by learning, sharing, and connecting with like-minded organizations. Think of meetups, company visits, knowledge sharing sessions, and more. While much of the activity of Rebel Cells happens locally, all Cells are connected to a global network of pioneering organizations. Knowledge sharing happens through online content, monthly online events, and a yearly in-person meetup for all members from around the world. Since announcing the concept, more than 130 companies have expressed interest to join. Based on that interest, we’re launching a first batch of cells in 7 countries: 🇯🇵 Japan 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇩🇪 Germany 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇬🇧 UK 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇸🇮 Slovenia Together with local ‘cell coordinators’, we are welcoming pioneering organizations to join these cells. How can YOU help make your employer more sustainable? At eBay, we have a whole team focusing on our efforts to be a sustainable company in the long run. That’s a great accomplishment but also kind of a given for a company that is the “home of pre-loved”. We publish an impact report on our efforts every year (please find a link to the most recent report in the comments). OK, so Tilmann, you’re just relaying this? That’s not good enough. I agree. Here are my thoughts on what people (you and I!) can contribute: 1. My role model example is Anna Moeller. When I joined in 2013, eBay Germany (including companies in the group at the time), had a run rate of more than 1,000 paper cups per weekday through our wonderful cafeteria. That’s 260,000 paper cups a year. Anna had the audacity to question the status quo. I didn’t think she could pull this off. But she did. Ever since 2017 (Anna, keep me honest if you read this), we haven’t had paper cups in the office and have been running on “porcelain / glass only”. Coffee tastes better in a proper cup and we have saved more than 1M (!) cups since then. 2. My personal story: When I handed back my first “old” eBay MacBook Pro in 2015 after using it for three years, I asked “What happens next with this device?”. I couldn’t find a great answer (“We can’t donate it for legal reasons” was what I was told but it didn’t fly with me). With the magical help of Fabian Schilder and Matthias Weyer we have since donated over 500 devices to schools and non-profits (and we will continue this summer). 3. This is YOUR #3 (I don’t actually have one but know we like to read stuff in lists, thanks to Alessia Henoch and Anna Ultsch 😉). This is where your idea will go in my next post. Tech companies are sleazy. I've heard that charge from consultants MANY times. I haven't experienced it much myself, so it's been hard for me to really pin down what the issues are, but what I've gathered is: a) They fail to understand the needs of clients. They push solutions that don't solve the problems that need to be addressed b) They lack honesty and integrity in their business practices. They are untrustworthy, and no one wants to do business with someone they can't trust. c) In the nonprofit tech space, they see clients simply as dollar signs, not as mission-driven organizations making the world a better place. The nicest thing people have said to me when this comes up is, "Tech companies are sleazy, but not CauseMatch" or "Sales guys are untrustworthy, but not you Jeremy!" I couldn't and wouldn't work at a company I didn't believe in. I couldn't and wouldn't work at a company that lacked integrity. I couldn't and wouldn't work at a company in the nonprofit sector that wasn't inspired by the work of its clients. This video is my story from today... Without naming names...
