A famous quote among aviators is; "The only time you have too much fuel is when you are on fire". The pilot of a Beechcraft King Air found out that the combustion in his engines stopped when he didn't have enough fuel, on the 10th of June 2013. An emergency landing was the result. Along with the more numerous B-24, this iconic aircraft formed the American heavy bomber fleet in World War 2. Strongly constructed, it could fly even with three engines shot out and with large holes in its wings and fuselage. It had a crew of 10 comprised of two pilots, a navigator, bombardier, engineer/gunner, radio operator/gunner, waist gunners, ball turret gunner, and tail gunner. Flying from bases around the world, each aircraft was supported by an extensive maintenance and repair team. Actors Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart flew missions in Europe on this aircraft. It was powered by four turbosupercharged R-1820 Wright Cyclone engines of 1,200 HP each and featured a large vertical tail for stability. Over 12,000 of all types were produced, of which approximately 50 are still in existence and 9 are airworthy. The original prototype, the Boeing Model 299, crashed on take-off in October 1935 because a gust lock had not been removed from the elevator. This led to the creation and adoption of the modern aircraft checklist. The Dutch Hawker Hunter Foundation (DHHF) has announced with deep regret the termination of its operations, marking the end of an era for aviation enthusiasts and the legacy of the Hawker Hunter in Europe. The foundation will also divest its prized Hawker Hunter Mk68 G-EHLW, which remains grounded at Horizon Aircraft Services Ltd. (HAS) in St Athan, Wales. The DHHF’s journey with the Hawker Hunter Mk68, designated N-322/G-EHLW, began with optimism. In July 2022, after extensive maintenance and rigorous inspections in Altenrhein, Switzerland, the aircraft was ferried to St Athan under a UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Permit to Test & Ferry. The foundation anticipated that minor modifications would soon secure a Full Permit to Fly from the CAA, allowing the Hunter to soar over Dutch skies by the end of summer that year. However, the reality diverged drastically from these expectations. The UK CAA’s handling of the application process proved to be protracted and unpredictable, lacking a clear timeline or assurance of a positive outcome. Nearly two years after its arrival in the UK, N-322 remains grounded without the crucial Permit to Fly, and the prospects of obtaining one remain uncertain. These delays have not only thwarted the DHHF’s operational plans but also introduced additional regulatory and logistical challenges. #whatsitwednesday - a VTOL aircraft. A Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft is an "Aircraft capable of vertical climbs and/or descents and of using very short runways or small areas for takeoff and landings. These aircraft include, but are not limited to, helicopters" (Federal Aviation Administration). But now according to the UK'a Civil Aviation Authority: " ‘VTOL aircraft’ means a heavier-than-air aircraft, other than aeroplane or helicopter, capable of performing vertical procedures by means of more than two lift/thrust units and is certified for one or more occupants."

Did you know the Argosy was to be the last ever aircraft to be designed by aircraft manufacturer Armstrong Whitworth? I think it’s quite sad that this is their last aircraft, as their Whitley bomber formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force’s bomber fleet at the beginning of the Second World War. Entering service the same year the Berlin Wall went-up in 1961, the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy was a rather large four engine transport aircraft that saw service with the Royal Air Force and British European Airways among other operators. It was powered by four Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines and operated as a transport and troop transport aircraft. The Argosy is distinguished by its high twin fuselage and twin vertical stabilisers, held together by a large elevator, similar in design to the P38 Lightning twin engine fighter of World War Two. In its military use, the aircraft was used to gradually replace the then ageing Vickers Valetta and Handley Page Hastings transport aircraft and was also modified to enable the egress of paratroopers. The military version had nearly twice the range of the civilian Series 100. The civilian airliner variant of the type could carry an impressive 80 passengers in relative comfort. Early-on in the aircraft’s development, to try and save on design costs, the wing of the Argosy was based around that of the Avro Shackleton. The Argosy had a unique flight deck, as it was set above the freight or passenger area, in order to provide for more internal space. Placing the flight deck in this configuration gave the aircraft a cargo space of 3 metres by 14.3 metres. TAIL SKID A tail skid, also known as a tail wheel, is a small wheel or bracket located at the rear of an aircraft, typically on the tail section. Its purpose is to: 1. Support the tail during takeoff, landing, and taxiing 2. Prevent the tail from dragging on the ground 3. Provide stability and balance during ground operations Tail skids are commonly found on smaller aircraft, such as: 1. General aviation planes 2. Vintage or classic aircraft 3. Some military planes 4. Crop dusters 5. Aerobatic planes In contrast, larger commercial aircraft typically have a tail cone or a fuselage-mounted tail wheel that retracts into the aircraft's body during flight.
