As has been widely reported today, BNSF Railway and J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. announced the launch of the Quantum intermodal product. Yes the same name as the 1989 TOFC service. As Thomas Williams and Spencer Frazier tell me, the target is shippers who have just in time freight or time-sensitive cargo that has traditionally gone to truckload because of the inconsistency of Intermodal. The advertised on-time benchmark for this new service is 95%+ with truck-like reliability. The way it was described to me is like first class service. There will always be eyeballs on the Quantum loads, and the Quantum loads will get priority loading, unloading, and dray service. Just like the first class customer gets on and off the plane earlier and the bags are usually on the carousel before everyone else. Pricing will be more expensive than traditional intermodal but cheaper than truckload on the longer lengths of haul. It should still provide a rebate to trucking on those 1,440+ mile routes.

The folks at FreightWaves got a nice jump on the first day of their Future of Freight Festival (https://lnkd.in/gzu2cubf) with the announcement by J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. and BNSF Railway of new premium intermodal service branded Quantum. A closer working relationship between the two companies and more careful attention to speed and reliability may allow the new service to attract more truckloads to rail.
