"The safest way to move goods over land." That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores." NS to eliminate Midwest service from Charleston, Savannah due to low volumes Norfolk Southern Railway will halt intermodal service from Charleston and Savannah to Chicago, Cincinnati, and Louisville in mid-March due to low volumes. This move follows a similar decision regarding service to Birmingham and New Orleans. Resources will be redirected to high-volume lanes like Atlanta and Memphis. The Georgia Ports Authority, impacted by the decision, emphasizes that CSX Transportation continues to serve these routes and assures no impact on planned projects. Federal inspectors said they found an alarming number of defects in the locomotives and railcars Union Pacific Railroad was using at the world’s largest railyard in western State of Nebraska this summer, and the railroad was reluctant to fix the problems. Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Amit Bose wrote a letter to UP’s top three executives Sept. 8 expressing his concern that the defects represent a “significant risk to rail safety “ on the Union Pacific railroad. "The Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority (BSPRA), as a subdivision of state government and the largest transportation district in Montana, is pleased to offer the below comments as a supplement to the input we provided at the Amtrak Daily Long-Distance Study Northwest Working Group meeting in Boise, ID, on July 18, 2023.
