A key takeaway from JOC's Port Performance conference was the amount of infrastructure investment made by Port authorities, specifically around rail. The Port of Long Beach is quadrupling rail capacity as ~2/3 of its cargo moves east of the Mississippi River via rail. This is further supported by the ~$1.5B investment BNSF makes in the Barstow International Gateway. On the East Coast, The Port of Virginia is amid a rail expansion project set to increase its capacity by >35% as ~1/3 of its cargo is transported via rail. The Vancouver Island Railway is a unique Public-Private partnership between the Island Corridor Foundation (owned by the 14 First Nations and 5 Regional Districts it passes through since 2005) and its partner operator, Southern Rail of Vancouver Island (SVI) under contract to deliver freight, passenger, and maintenance services on behalf of the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF). After an extensive array of independent analysis of the railway contracted by the BC government in recent years, a viable business case has been put forward for the public to see. Who thought about the "Iron Highway" or "Pacific Gateway" first? Was it that Island Rail Corp? Nope. Was it me? Nope. It was the Island Corridor foundation working with the 14 First Nations and the 5 regional districts the railway passes through. Right in the Executive summary they talk about it without calling it by name. "freight operations throughout the entire Island, with particular emphasis on our ports." WASHINGTON — About $290 million of $653 million in new federal grants awarded by the Biden administration will be used to improve truck capacity at U.S. ports. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Friday the winners of the latest annual round of funding under the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), administered by DOT’s Maritime Administration. Of the 41 port projects receiving money through the program in 2023, 11 feature significant improvements aimed at speeding truck freight in and out of coastal and inland ports. “This is a day of good news for America’s supply chains and good news for every American interested in seeing the price of goods go down and stay down,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a press briefing prior to the announcement. “There is still an enormous amount of work to do. The goal is not to get American supply chains back to what they looked like in 2019 — which was adequate on a good day but not able to handle a disruption. The Port Authority of NY and NJ is taking an innovative approach to improve the cargo gateway on the East Coast - through the $220 million Port Street Corridor improvement project. This project that encompasses road and ramp upgrades to the main artery in Port Newark will feature an efficient roadway configuration that promotes safe trucking operations, leading to significant time savings and a reduction in carbon emissions. With a $44 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program, this project will enhance efficiency and reliability across the supply chain. The survey found 60 percent of eligible voters back additional construction against just seven percent who are opposed, with a majority also backing a ban on short-haul flights which can be covered by rail in less than two and a half hours. A new 171-mile high-speed line linking San Francisco and Los Angeles is currently being built by the California High-Speed Rail Authority, which hopes to later extend it to Sacramento and San Diego. Separately work began in April on a new 218-mile high-speed railway between Las Vegas in Nevada and southern California. In Texas there are proposals for two new high-speed lines connecting Dallas to both Houston and Fort Worth, though they remain in the preliminary stages.
