Yesterday's announcement of Equal Access Public Media had me shaking. I was excited. I was nervous. On top of that? I had a last minute interview about EAPM. Wheh. But the reaction from all of you out there was fantastic! Clearly, this little idea of mine – this thing I've been writing about in bits and pieces here on LinkedIn since last April – has resonated. Yesterday, the person interviewing me asked why we didn't just ask an established publication to take a pledge to be more accessible? Pledges are great. I'd love every company and corporation out there to sign a pledge that says, "We'll be accessible." But that doesn't really do what we're doing. The journalists who helped me build up the idea from April to November 2023 and do a nationwide search for our inaugural board of directors are actual disabled and chronically ill people – part of the pan-disability community – who knew we had to start fresh with a totally new concept. Our board is a group of disability and chronic illness activists and advocates who are starting out with the premise that the "old ways" don't work. The corporation will look different. The newsroom will look different. The publication will look different. The very essence of how we do everything will be different. Accessibility is front and center of everything we do. That leads us to think more about collaboration and support. That leads us to think more about flexibility. That leads us to flip our thinking entirely. We'll be starting our fundraising efforts very soon, and I want to see everyone on board. This is a community effort. We'll need every individual and every corporate sponsor to dig deep and help us meet our goal if we're going to do this. 🎆 As the year nears an end and Make Kindness Count completes our first five months of service, I am deriving so much joy from reflecting on one of the most exciting projects we worked on in 2023! We have been guiding a small nonprofit through the critical transition from cash to accrual basis accounting. Our expertise included setting up a tailored chart of accounts, incorporating the use of projects in QuickBooks Online, and establishing classes for better tracking. This campaign is my brainchild and is a way to make a TRUE difference this Juneteenth by supporting my work to provide wellness and economic development resources to Black moms and families who are descendants of enslaved Africans. We’re raising $100,000 to create a Chicago where all of us feel safe. Your contributions will support over 1,800 moms and women registered for our BLOOM Network programming. It will allow us to achieve: 🏢 Our first 3,500 sq ft brick-and-mortar space for programming and operations 💜 A new Care Team of licensed professionals providing critical wellness services 🧘🏾♀️ A new Programming Team of educators providing robust trainings and experiential support 👦🏾 A direct service team providing childcare and transportation services to make our programming accessible in innovative ways I founded FRO when I was a teenager. I have been doing human rights advocacy for nearly a decade. My work has taken me from the South side of Chicago to the United Nations to University of Pennsylvania I have channeled my Ivy League education and international platform to create an impact on my block, in the neighborhood I grew up in. Why? Because I believe in the power, brilliance, and agency of my community. We know what we need to be well. These goals were created with the needs of Black women, moms, and families at the center.
