Dear LinkedIn friends and connections I’ve gotten a lot of inquiries this week on email, text, and a few phone calls asking why the position below is posted on job boards like IAEM and others. For those of you wondering, yes, this is the position I currently hold. I am still the EM Chief for Sarasota County until end of business, Friday, August 25th and I am working on wrapping up a few things up that the team can take forward once I depart. Many asked “Are you retiring?” My answer: Not quite yet. That’s Chapter 4. This is Cherry Lane in St. James City on Pine Island yesterday…53 days after Hurricane Ian made landfall. American Legion 173 served 800 meals on Tuesday…53 days after landfall. It will be the only place open on the 16-mile island on Thanksgiving. The Legion is cooking 75 turkeys to feed over 1,800 folks. The debris piles were well over 15 feet high. Reminders of Hurricane Irma in Big Pine Key… The residents here know they have much to be thankful for, but the reality and recovery they face brings tears and uncertainty. The SERT Mental Health team met with a older Cuban widow who was desperately trying to clean out the family’s trailer. It was her husband’s favorite place, and now she is grieving his loss all over again because losing the trailer is like losing him all over again. She kept asking why??? I watched the Team do their amazing work, and then walked back to my car, got my rosary, came back and gently put it in her hand and quietly said, “Dios no te olvidado.” God has not forgotten you. She grabbed my arm and buried her head on my side. I drove back to Tampa last night in silence - no music, no phone…just quiet space to let the brain process the day. I am blessed to do the work I do. I am blessed abundantly to see the tenacity and courage of recovery over and over again. My friend, Major John B. Carter (USA Retired), wrote recently about resiliency resting and rooting itself in hope. He is right and I see it every time I’m in the field. How can you not take on the courageous yes after witnessing this!
