It was our designer’s last day before maternity leave. So I promoted her. Why? Because she earned it. And despite the fact that she was about to leave for six months she deserved to go have her third baby knowing we see and value her work, we appreciate her absolute ride or die energy for the company, and that we will be eagerly awaiting her return. Sure, we could have waited for her to return this summer for the raise to hit the payroll, but pregnant women should not be punished in their careers for also being mothers. You can grow your family and advance your career at the same time— and for Kelly Kinnaird— it happened on the same day ✨ . I’m so proud to work alongside this absolute gem from Birmingham, Alabama (of all places!) who joined us a contractor and is now a lifer. Here’s a pic of her on our promotion call—> three hours later she went into labor and had a healthy baby boy! Would you have promoted a father and given paternal leave? The answer is no. Genuinely sick and tired of seeing one sided "equality" the workplace like this.

Oh my gosh. This made me cry! 🥹 My first maternity leave in 2018 equates to the darkest days of my career. A new director started 3 weeks before I went into labor, and during my 10 week leave, the remaining three people on my team quit. When I returned, I carried the team, advised the director, trained three new employees, and had an intern report to me all while using the Mother's room three times a day. I worked remotely during my morning and afternoon commute on the bus in attempt to complete the responsibilities of my assigned role. I was at the bottom of the totem pole and when I advocated a promotion for myself, I was denied. I love to hear how society is changing regarding mothers and maternity leave. I hope no other mother experiences the turmoil I endured!

Can a woman be promoted AND have a baby on the same day? Absolutely 💯 Kim Gebbia Chappell’s post shows you can grow your family and advance your career at the same time, even on the same day. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - kids don’t ruin your career, companies who don’t support you when you have kids ruin your career. They don’t make mothers pay the motherhood tax. They don’t penalize women for having families by demoting them, taking away opportunities, or putting additional obstacles in their way. The best retention strategy is paying people what they’re worth and letting them live their own unique lives. Truly, this is not extraordinary flexibility. It’s not a heroic lifting-up, it’s not “special rights” or favoritism for woman employees. It’s actually far simpler — it’s treating an employee’s career as her career, and her life as her life. She’s being promoted because she deserves a promotion, and her maternity leave isn’t a factor in that. She’s entitled to maternity leave because she’s going to have a baby, and — despite what a lot of people seem to think — that isn’t actually directly job-related! “What if she quits?” I hear some voices saying. “A lot of new moms quit.” That’s her choice, and she could do that at any time, whether her new job is motherhood or simply advancement elsewhere. Do you want her talent on your team? Make it worth her while, and to heck with trying to guess whether she’s going to choose her baby over your employment. If you stop trying to play 3-D chess with your employees’ motives and figuring out exactly which pizza party or ping pong table will fix everything, you might find that it’s way easier to find and keep great talent than you ever thought possible. I’m glad at least some people are starting to figure that out.

This is what good leadership looks like…. Empathetic Compassionate Joyful Forward-thinking Strategic Ethical Equitable This decision makes so much sense to me. A backfill contract position while new mama is at home with the new baby and recovering from an extremely physically traumatic experience. This puts the contract person in the enviable position of potentially being hired full-time in a now vacant role. After maternity, the new mother comes back to a promotion into a new position as a valuable employee who… Knows the business Is clear on processes Understands and fits into the company culture Has relationships with key stakeholders …and ready to hit the ground running in a new challenge while her career trajectory and momentum are protected from taking a hit. All because her leader has the ability to… Be strategic. Logically think through what is best for the organization and her people. Think outside the box Have the courage to go against convention for the good of the company. Not get stuck in an outdated “best practice” (best for whom?!). Understand what equity really looks like. Leadership + heart + relationship. Are you this type of leader…? Amazing to see Kim Chappell leading by example and promoting her valued employee as she was about to go on maternity leave. I have never heard of this happening before but it’s a great reminder that promotions should be based on what had already been achieved, not perceptions about potential or future achievements. Also, that becoming a mother does not mean your career is, or should be, negatively impacted. Love 👏 to 👏 see 👏 it! After reading and celebrating this post, I was curious on Bobbie's parental leave policy... couldn't freakin' believe it when I read that the formula company offers "birthing and non-birthing employees up to 12 months of leave and allows them to return to work on their own terms." AMAZING. They ensure employees receive 100% pay for the first four months. So many people, including me, reconsider family plans because they can't afford to lose 30-40% of their pay (as I would in California) OR MORE in other states to leave work even if they have job protection. Being a young mother and HR Professional in the workforce, I have seen firsthand inequities that occur when it comes to promotional opportunities and other rewards. The story below is a great example of how organizations can start closing the gaps we see in equity and ensure promotional opportunities and other rewards are inclusive to all employees that have earned them through high-performance and beyond. When going out on maternity leave, or any long-term leave for that matter, there are a lot of anxieties and concern from employees regarding what the workplace will look like upon return, and if their accomplishments and contributions will still be recognized. The way that leadership and the organization respond to those anxieties and concerns makes all the difference in someone's likelihood to not only return, but to thrive upon return. Props to this organization for recognizing this star employee and ensuring she knows she is valued as she goes out on maternity leave and when she returns!

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. It's incredibly touching to see companies prioritize and uplift their employees, especially women who are juggling the responsibilities of both career and family.
