Throughout my journey as a professional athlete, mental health and mindfulness have played a crucial role in helping me achieve peak performance, on and off the field. During my last season at Stanford University, I was introduced to Tobe Hanson, through my teammate Christian McCaffrey, and his book "Athlete’s Way of Excellence." Tobe's book delves into the wisdom modern athletes can pull from ancient Chinese teachings of Zen and Kung Fu, the power of the breath, and the value of intentional thinking. Since then, mindfulness and manifestation have become a big part of my routine, allowing me to set ambitious goals while prioritizing my physical, mental, and emotional health. One practice that has become integral in my routine is night-time meditation. It allows me to quiet my mind at night, releasing the stresses of the day, and wake up feeling rejuvenated and energized. Working closely with a mental performance coach has also been transformative for me. It's a safe space where I can explore and articulate my thoughts about my performance, allowing me to shift away from a perfectionist mindset and toward a growth mindset—recognizing that every challenge is an opportunity for growth when approached in a healthy and intentional way. I'm grateful for the support and tools that have empowered me to integrate mental health practices into my athletic journey. With #MensMentalHealthAwarenessMonth coming to a close, let's continue to prioritize mental health in sports and keep the dialogue open around the ways in which we can support athletes in becoming their best selves.
I would love to connect with you regarding our initiative. Music is mental.. I myself as a former student athlete and daughter of former professional player, understand the importance of access to mental healthcare, especially as a relates to performance, expectations and life after sports. I hoped to connect at Donald Stewart camp. But I hope we can connect now. I think you are an important voice and opening up the conversation to young black men.
Best Selves! YES! To me, mindfulness is not only a powerful practice to support our mental health, it is absolutely foundational to the practice of self-awareness. Self-awareness is essential to know are showing up others, how we are leading others, how are we being in relationship to others and how we foster the most important thing all of us need and that is to belong.
