A Powerful Lesson in Sportsmanship and Values. Remember the inspiring story of Kenyan runner Abel Mutai and Spanish athlete Ivan Fernandez? As Mutai approached the finish line, he became confused and stopped, thinking he had won. Fernandez, right behind him, realized the mistake and selflessly pushed Mutai to victory. When asked why he didn't take advantage of the situation, Fernandez replied, "My dream is to create a community where we help each other win." He added, "I didn't let him win; the race was his." A ball whooshed by my head as I attempted to play Altinha, a sport popular on the beaches of Brazil. The goal is to keep a ball in the air for as long as possible, without using your hands. I had so much fun covering the Altinha Club at my school and learning about this popular sport. They let me join in and play with them too! Though I wasn't great, it was a super enjoyable sport! Instructions are on the Google Form (link below) To maintain the integrity of the competition we will request GMS Numbers. If you are likely to have less than 25 in an age group we would advise combining with another interested club for a specific age group for this seasons competition whilst you grow your age group. We are happy to act as an intermediary. If you are in this position please confirm interest and numbers on the entry form but hold off paying any entry fee until you have an agreed team for combining. We would also suggest a squad larger than 30 would restrict game time so would advise any larger cluster clubs to consider splitting for a specific age group if it is large. In the wake of the success of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and the increase in support for, and investment in women’s football, we look at the proposed Tasmanian stadium, which will be the home of the recently named “Tasmania Devils”. As the newest team in the AFL, the grant of the license by the AFL to the Tasmania Devils is conditional on the construction of a new purpose built stadium. Amid public controversy and competing visions for the new stadium, the government must ensure that the development serves a broader range of purposes whilst also being economically viable. Croke park v Lansdowne road…? Like Irish unity there’s a thought you’d think might never happen. However, money always talks. It could solve a lot of problems- 1. Athmosphere “Compared with the regular Six Nations crowd, the World Cup attendees were younger and more boisterous, drawn from across the spectrum of sports. When it comes to spring, many of those supporters find themselves locked out by the model that sees the union distribute their tickets through the clubs, who often bundle at least some of them and sell them to corporate entities and travel companies. The income they generate funds the sport at a local level, but an additional capacity would allow the union to investigate ways to tap into the latent interest from the World Cup” Enjoyment- It will stop the boozers in the stands destroying the enjoyment of the others. Far more can attend. Money- It would generate a lot more, and perish the thought, the IRFU might even reduce prices to encourage real fans. So how about leaving the RDS and Lansdowne road? Allow Leinster use it. The GAA use it. More Concerts. As the IRFU don’t really care about their Patrons once they get their money that won’t be an issue. They side step a changing culture towards boozing.
