Morning all 😁 today is a press release day as I have four clients with exciting news. So it’s a multiple screen day for me 😂 Nothing bothers me more than people who ‘spray and pray’ with their press releases - media are inundated with irrelevant and boring press releases every day so it’s important to stand out. I use Vuelio as my media database (which all our retained clients then get access to), but I don’t often use it to send press releases as I would rather send a personal email to someone I’ve already made the effort to connect with. Having been through most of the database platforms (some at pretty eye watering prices!), I’m loving this one, the interface is great and the information up to date. All my clients have a curated media database that we work on for them and I take a lot of time researching the publications and the journalists to see what they like writing about and what will be interesting to them. As all of my fellow (and legit) PR bods will agree, if anyone tries to take money off you for a single press release and says you will get coverage (especially without even working on a story for you), run for the hills! PR is NOT a scam, however you are certainly scamming yourself by not understanding it. Thank you Keyaira N. Boone for this critical breakdown following the online discourse around the value of public relations. To summarize, people who feel 'scammed' by PR typically: 1️⃣ Are not vetting who they are working with (because yes, scammers do exist. Some people pretend to be publicists.) 2️⃣ Don't know what earned media is (hint: you can't pay for it.) Earned media comes from impactful storytelling, newsworthiness, established media relationships, etc. 3️⃣ Aren't playing the long game. Results take time- if you want quicker results, try marketing or advertising. Some months back, we heard in the news and social media the case of a tomato processing company with bad/negative product review. The company rather that addressing the core issues around their product went ahead to arrest the consumer which led to a bad public relations image for the company. THE LOI-LOI STORY It was evening. I stood in front of the woman's kiosk to buy something. She was not responding to me after I told her exactly what I wanted. "Madam, give me 3 wraps of LOI-LOI." Strange. I was on a short stay in Akwa Ibom for an official meeting I was invited to. My host had soup already, so I came out to get 'swallow.' You know how it is. Now, I didn't factor in societal change. Growing up in Port Harcourt, we say "LOI-LOI," and everyone just understands. She looked at me. The few seconds of delay felt like 10 minutes. Then, she traced my eyes to the transparent bucket I kept looking at, just on the wooden table by her left. That's when she got it. "You mean fu-fu?!" I spoke with my friend later, and he confirmed my thoughts. They are not used to calling it LOI-LOI here. Interesting. If there was ever a marker for someone new in town… to that woman, I'm sure my face was painted with it. Now, some businesses do this too. They create content in a way only they (the brand) understand well. Not in the way their audience can completely relate to. That's why there's a rift. You have to do a lot of talking and 'pointing' before people get you. On social media, that makes you lose sales. For any brand I work with or manage, I make it a priority to study the audience, and even follow the conversations in the comments and tags, just to see what language they use to describe our product and their problems. Then, speak that right back to them. If you want to communicate and get results, this is important for your content marketing and social media strategy.
